Buying out Wideman would be stupid. With retained salary I think he could be traded for a decent return.

Jones was quietly good when he was healthy. Not $4m per year good, but solid. But he was also never healthy.

A season of a healthy Wideman anchoring our PP should see his value rise above the rock-bottom level it is currently at. May as we'll keep him around & shop him at the deadline.

Well almost never healthy. That's the trouble with a lot of physical players, after a while their bodies break down. I like Jones but if future injury problems make him not being able to be counted on, he's a candidate for a buy out.

I would rather him in the PB than a young guy that could benefit from playing in Adirondack and his salary (1.5ish?) helps get us up to the floor.
Burke recently stated the following at the season ticket holder event....

Quote:
Shane O’Brien was sent down because he wasn’t buying into the Flames’ culture of hard work every shift and in practice. Had to convince ownership to eat his contract. So basically what everyone knew about O’Brien before the Flames acquired him.

I'd be shocked out of my tree if they don't exercise some sort of buy out O'Brien.

Didn't not see that I thought Burke said SOB said all the right things when sent down but I guess that could be true as well as him not fitting in prior to demotion.

Jones sounds like the pefect guy to not get bought out right now. His cap hit helps reach the floor, plus he doesn't play often so rookies can take his spot.

You should be able to trade the buyout option to other teams.. It should be a benefit if you managed your team right to begin with

There is that but if you go by value for money, he's a candidate.

If this was a cap team I'd agree, but there's no purpose right now. The team needs to spend to the floor, why not keep Jones? And how is buying him out better value for the money? They still have to pay him if they buy him out.

I agree with you but when Treliving said, "We are evaluating", I put up Jones and Wideman as a long shot candidates for a buyout. Treliving could have a replacement for Jones in his sights, we don't know his plans. Besides SOB who would you put under consideration?

Nobody. Shane O'Brien is the only legit buyout candidate, IMO.

I may be wrong, but IMO "we are evaluating" means diddly squat.

Just a less boring way to say "no comment".

Evaluating could also mean they are waiting to see if any team will give them anything to use one of their compliance buyouts.

Anybody? Like it would be hard to replace what David Jones brings to this team.

He has played 81 games over the last 2 seasons. 11 goals, 14 assists, 25 pts. Got paid 8 million dollars for that sad stat line.

He is paid 4M a season until 2015-16. The Avs must still be laughing about off loading him and that horrible contract.

David Jones has been telling anyone who'll listen in Vancouver how horrid of a place Calgary is, etc, etc... Seems a very likely buyout candidate

Where did you get that from? I thought he liked it here because his wife knows the city, etc. - and Burke seemed to be very complimentary of the way he played before he got injured.

Of course, Treliving might feel differently.

I'll be there tonight. I will ask the question.

I realize we're probably going to have floor issues by buying a player or two out of their contract, but even if they do that it will free up a roster spot to get someone who may be a better fit, which will also reuse the cap hit.

I'll let you all know what they say.
