Is it safe to assume Spezza is banking on the fact that the Sabres are a division rival that he won't be traded to them?
Because they have a truckload of money to spend and a pretty crappy team. I mean if it was me, I would have probably put Buffalo on the list and left off Columbus as they aren't that abysmal.

Buffalo is close to his hometown but without the pressure of Canadian media/fans, in the weak Eastern conference and is reportedly a great place to live according to many ex-players/media guys.

With the 10 teams on the NTC, these are the teams left:
Anaheim - Yes
Boston - No (Bergeron, Krejci - same division)
Buffalo - Maybe (same division)
Carolina - Maybe (If big shake-up and Staal, Staal are taking ice time)
Chicago - Unlikely (cap issues)
Colorado - Unlikely (if Statsny re-signed, Duchene, MacKinnon, O'Reilly)
Dallas - Maybe (would be behind Seguin)
Detroit - Unlikely (Datsyuk, Zetterberg - same division)
Los Angeles - No (Kopitar, Carter, Stoll, Richards)
Minnesota - Maybe
NY Rangers - Yes (if buyout Brad Richards)
New Jersey - Yes
Philadelphia - Unlikely (cap issues and Giroux, Schenn, Couturier, Lecavalier)
Phoenix - Maybe (internal cap issues)
Pittsburgh - No (Crosby, Malkin)
San Jose - Maybe (if trade Thornton)
St. Louis - Yes
Tampa Bay - Unlikely (would be 2nd line behind Stamkos - same division)
Washington - Maybe (would be 2nd line behind Backstrom)
Based on looking at each team, the only real landing spots I see for Spezza are St. Louis, Anaheim, and NY Rangers, with San Jose and New Jersey as wildcards.

New Jersey only acquires old Czech players, so you can scratch them off the list too.

With his back injuries, he'd be best to stay in the East.

If Ott is will to retain some salary, they could really drive the price up for Spezza, I don't know if they are or not, haven't looked into it at all. But Spezza at 3.5 is much more attractive to a lot more teams then Spezza at 7 million.

Melnyk is a cheap skate, and they are an internal budget team. Can't see them retaining any money whatsoever.

I hope he gets dealt to Detroit and that aging core starts to decline fast and he wins nothing.

Would the cap hit be 3.5 as well? If so then ya that would make Spezza a very attractive player to a contender.

Interesting Spezza nixed every single Canadian team. Now I suppose a big reason of that is the Canadian teams are doing very poorly right now, outside the Habs, but it feels like there's more to it than that to name every single one Too much fan/media pressure?
Are we as fans starting (continuing) to drive our players away from our teams?

I would think that hockey teams look at the % of revenue going to players is more like the amount that is spent on product, rather than thinking of them as employees.
Does anyone have a clear definition of what is included in HRR? I am assuming it is ticket sales, merchandising, media rights revenue, ad revenue, brand licensing. Ownership might get to earn sales from non-nhl events in their arena complexes, other sports team they own, and so on...
I don't see a lot of financial statements where employees get 50% of earnings, but there are lots of examples where the cost of goods sold approach that level. Considering a "healthy" net margin for most business falls somewhere between 5-15%, and that I see many examples in media where ownership describes taking losses happily on ownership of sports franchises to offset gains in other lines of business, I am not sure what ownership in the NHL ends up taking home unless they are an "entertainment group" and own the real estate and several other teams in a city.
