Does it matter? The point is it is widely considered to be racist TODAY.

Lets be honest, the term was racist from the start, but society on the whole was way more accepting of racism in the past.

Word origins are strange. I suspect if you look back on a lot of terms that we consider racist or offensive today - you will find the origins may be quite different.

But who cares.

The fact that the term is associated with such a terrible history is the relevant point, and how the term is perceived today.

The term I think that is a no-go now which had "innocent" roots is negro. Spanish for black, black person is still a commonly used term today ... sorta makes sense.

That's a societal shift making a word unacceptable. Redskin? ... that's pretty much just messed up right off the bat.

The trademark Redskins was declared harmful by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, Redskins is a pejorative term for Native Americans and is a registered trademark that disparages an entire group and perpetuates a centuries old stereotype. The logo and term Redskins should never have been registered as a federally protected trademark, according to the report.

http://thehill.com/opinion/op-ed/208...ngton-redskins
The current chairman and chief of the Penobscot Nation, Chief Kirk Francis, recently declared that “redskins” is “not just a racial slur or a derogatory term” but a painful “reminder of one of the most gruesome acts of ... ethnic cleansing ever committed against [our] people.”

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/daniel...b_3210179.html
I mean, literally -- if you look up the word Redskin in the dictionary, it's defined simply as, "Used as a disparaging term for a Native American." This isn't even really debatable, the name is offensive not because of any sort of allusion or interpretation -- it's defined as a racial slur.

http://deadspin.com/redskins-a-nativ...ous-1445909360
Whether or not the term "Redskin" is inherently racist is the wrong question. The more appropriate question is, "Would it be acceptable to name a professional sports team according to the color of someone else's skin?" Would it ever be cool to have a sports team called the Washington Blackskins? It seems appropriate; D.C. is Chocolate City. But, um, hell no. San Francisco Yellowskins? Naw, cousin. Won't work.
This is from one of the articles;

Native American community commenced a broad-scale effort to eradicate the use of all 'Native' names and symbols.
If it was up to the natives there would be no Indians, Blackhawks, Redskins, etc. and I would be okay with that but not picking and choosing so I stand by making them all change or leaving them all alone.

I've still posted the only article with historical relevance as those are still opinion pieces.

You've posted an article on the origins of the word, but it is considered racist now, so your article is irrelevant.

Why do you have to do this?
Why do you constantly go to the well?
For every contentious social issue, you make some generally backwards claim, defend it, and then claim:
"Well I'm actually against it, but if not everything is going to change then nothing should."

It just don't understand you. You understand that change happens slowly right? Piece by piece? Nothing is just different all at once.

I couldn't agree more. While Redskins, or even Eskimos may only seem like a minor faux pas now, they are dated terms and have been replaced by new ones, right or wrong. Just think of all the terms used for the gay community in the past. Yes, they were used but there's no legitimate place for them now. Subjecting people over and over with these names is a little rude, and lazy

I had a Notre Dame pullover once when I back home to see my Family. My uncle from Cork was pissed when he saw the Leprechaun on the back - not a big of that being the representation of the Irish I suppose.

Or perhaps the Foreskins and put a picture of Daniel Snyder on the helmet with a cross through it.
