Free agency isn't over either. Masai has proven he's pretty much the best GM in the league not named R.C. Buford. I don't have any doubt he'll make some things happen.

I'd say free agency is over for the Raps because they have very limited cap space. They just have to keep Patterson and Vasquez. The big free agent time for the Raps is next year when Hayes, Amir, Fields, and Williams contracts all expire.

Best GM in the league not named RC Buford is pretty big praise for a guy whose teams have never win a play-off series.
I like what Masai did getting rid of Gay and Bargnani and he seems to have done the best with what he has to work with here but I think he needs to have a little more in court success before he is considered top 5/10 let alone 2nd.
As for Lowry signing I guess it's what they had to do. Decent term, decent money.

The GM assembles the talent. The coach does the rest. You can't say Masai hasn't proven to be excellent at assembling talent and, more importantly, robbing teams in trades.

Which coaches has he had that have screwed up the talent?
I would say excellent at assembling talent is a little string and the stealing talent in trades is a little overrated as well.
What he has done a good job of is trading big names that fans are emotional about so those trades get blown out of proportion by the fans.
The Nuggets have a lot of mediocre guys on that team which is better than lots of teams out there that have crisp but that is far from an excellent group of talent.
Masai is likely in the top half if GMs in the league and rising but your teams need to have on court success to be considered a top GM in the league.

The Raptors went from 6-12 to 48-34, which means they went 42-22 after the Rudy Gay trade. I don't think you can blow that out of proportion. He literally got us our entire bench in one trade. That's pretty damn good asset management.
In 3 seasons in Denver, he won 50 games + in 2 seasons and the other he still had a winning record in the shortened season. They should've been in the lotter when they traded away Melo, but they still stayed a winning team. When Masai left they were in the lottery.
His teams have had on court success regardless of playoff results. He has put out excellent teams.

That clears about another 3.5 mill. About 13.5 mill in cap space. 12 men on the roster right. Wonder who Masai is targeting.

He got a mediocre bench that wasn't good enough to win a round in the pathetic East.
He added okay talent to Denver and one of the reasons they lost in the play-offs is having 0 elite level guys on the team to make big plays when needed.
In Toronto there again is a whole lot of mediocre guys on the roster.
He has made good moves but when you have GM's in the league with multiple rings, multiple trips to the finals, multiple Conference finals I find it hard to say that Masai is better than all of them because he added an okay bench that wasn't good enough to beat NJ with home court advantage.
Again, Masai is good (likely top 15), he is a huge improvement over Colangelo, he is young and looks to be improving/on the rise but he is nowhere near top 2 as was mentioned in this thread earlier.
He was given a very tough situation and for the most part I like what he has done. I hope he is not overly to this team concept he seemed to promote in Denver as that is a recipe for mediocrity. He is in tough in that he can't really tank for the top talent and has to bring back okay guys like Lowry but likely isn't going far with Lowry and DD as the top guys either. Hopefully he can find a gem in the next couple of drafts (and not Brazilian chumps that you think makes you look smarter than everyone else).

Woj is reporting Vasquez is back on a two year $13.5 million deal. Not too shabby, good term to trade him for something later on.

Yup, I like the Vasquez signing. I like his attitude and confidence he brings to the team - including his play. Dollar wise it's really a little on the high end, but probably by a million or so, so can't complain. Blatche again though, he's an average centre in the league at best, but would be a step in the right direction which arguably needed the most upgrading. Assuming Val, DeRozan and Patterson get better this year and the others maintain their play from last season (which really is next to impossible), this team looks pretty good on paper in the East.

Raps bring back James Johnson on a two year deal, no financials yet. He has some ugly legal issues to resolve however.

JJ has a nasty attitude and can play defense. I like this signing. The tougher they get and the better they can play defensively is the only way they move forward without big stars.
