Are you really that slow? Airdrie itself has basically everything we need, now with a shopping mall just five minutes away there isn't much need to go into Calgary. Its really only missing hospitals, and maybe some fine dinning type restaurants.

Agreed. There are some great options though. Rico's in the Village is my favourite spot in Airdrie. Good wine list, great food.

There's a new Italian place opening just north of Superstore, I'm hoping it's a good spot.

Hopefully the Urgent Care is expanded to 24hr soon. I know they're looking into a new location so they can expand.

Yes, but I was creating airdrie slogans not calgary slogans.

Calgary; it's a great, world class city, with lots to do.

I once spent the night in the Airdrie RCMP drunk tank, good times!

Look at all these Airdrie posters. There must be a line to get in to the Boston Pizza again.

All I know is we have a whole thread dedicated to Airdire and what it has to offer and the only positives we've seen from the locals so far is they have enough stores there to get things they need without having to drive to an entire other city.

Well the hospital thing is pretty big, but besides that I believe MMF was talking city type amenities like theaters, galleries, museums, etc. Not to mention sports teams, concert venues, and all sorts of other entertainment options.

Important to some, not to all and that's fine. But I would be the same way, if a mall and grocery store can contain everything I need, just put me down.

But us simple minded airdrie folk are not nearly as high class as yourself and MM. Must be so nice to live in a city that has art galleries and museums. I mean us hillbillys in airdrie would never be able to afford the gas money to drive to such quaint places.

Actually, I think this is really the heart of the difference between Okotoks, Cochrane and Airdrie. They're all technically "Parasite" towns/cities, but I think Airdrie's is the only one that is shamelessly just simply a place to go where Calgary is still your city, but you live there cause it's cheaper.

With Okotoks and Cochrane you have towns that have established themselves as neat little foothills/near the mountains towns with at least some character and charm.

Of course part of the reason people live there is likely that you can get a cheaper house, but after working in Okotoks for a while and visiting Cochrane many times, both have a feeling of "ahhh, I'm out of the big city. The mountains are close by, there's really nice river and park areas for all sorts of outdoor activities. Hey, maybe I'll check out the Dawgs baseball game that the town really gets behind". They're both just minutes from really nice foothill region parks, as well.

They both have qualities about them and really nice scenery. Like there's actually a reason to live in those places over Calgary besides just money saved on a house. But you go to Airdrie and it's kind of cramped little city, with a big highway running through it, no "we're not the big city" charm and it's on the NE corner of Calgary surrounded by flat farmer's fields.

It really just feels like any other bedroom community in Calgary. It truly is just an extension of Calgary where people can get a cheaper house.

We have thread about everything else, so why is it a problem to have a thread about a community that a number of posters live in. I don't think anyone would have an issue if someone started a thread about Woodbine or where all those affluent folks live in the core.

So far this thread has been about a bunch of trolls coming in to pile on because they think it's funny (some of it has been). I would much prefer to be talking about some of the great restaurants or a store someone didn't know was there. Instead it's turned into "Calgary is awesome, and the poor unwashed live in Airdrie".

I don't feel like I have to defend living in Airdrie but I'll put my 2 cents in anyway. I love Calgary, I consider myself a Calgarian too, I love my job in Calgary and would never change that. I've lived in the NW part of the city (Hidden Valley, Capital Hill and Brentwood) and I've also lived downtown. All great experiences.

I grew up in a small prairie town, and loved the idea of raising my kid/s in a smaller town, but wanting to stay working in the city my wife and I made the choice buy in Airdrie after checking out Chestermere, High River and various other parts of the city, it made the most sense for us. It's quick access to the city, we both work on the north end of the city.

Are there things that aren't as great… yes. Driving into the city for Emergency medical after 10pm isn't ideal, but hopefully thats solved soon. While there is a definite lack of fine dinning in Airdrie there are some great restaurants. I know while a lot of people enjoy the anonymity of a big city, I love my neighbourhood and knowing almost everyone on my block by first name. And yes I know you can get that in Calgary too, from my experience its less common.

So people want to hack on the place I live great, tell me which part of Calgary you live in and I'm sure I could rip your neighbourhood just as well.
