If we are 1st or 2nd in the pacific next year at the deadline the pick could be in play. It is just highly doubtful we would be in that spot
I don't think highly doubtful is quite strong enough. There has been outstanding player development this season, but...
Obviously Monahan has and, in my opinion, will be great moving forward.
I believe the Colborne aquisition will turn into one of those trades that is talked about for years. I still think the big man even now is only scratching the surface of what he is capable of, and his progression this season has very steep.
I also believe Gaudreau will sign and will become that offensive 'game changer' that the Flames have lacked for a long time. I think those three can form a line that will eventually rival the best out there.
None of this will happen next year. If Cammy is gone, I'm not sure how his offense will be replaced. Our recent excellent run of late was mostly driven by his offensive output.
Flames will be a lottery team next year. How low? I have no clue. I think it could be top 3 or could be 13th. Either are equally possible, imo. It is going to be fun to see it play out.
I was very happy the flames got him at the draft. However, i would have never have imagined him having the kind of success in his first pro season, as a teenager, as he did. Am super excited to see what he can do in the next few years, as he gets bigger, stronger, quicker.
This is a comparison that on the surface is ripe for the picking.....but I see Mckinnon's Stamkos to Monahan's Toews.
Stamkos is flashy. Great shot, great goal scorer. A stat machine. Toews is rarely near the top of any of the prime stat lists. I don't particularly find him "flashy" per se. But he is still regarded as one of the best in the game today.
Mckinnon is racking up the points in impressive\flashy style on the upstart Avs. Monahan is quietly going about his business in "boring" but damn impressive style. Pierre Lebrun didn't even mention him in his recent blog about Calder candidates. He mentioned about 5-6 other, but not Monahan. How absurd is that? I don't think you can shoehorn Monahan into any current player comparison. If I were to come up with a super lazy hybrid comparison, it would be a Eric Stall\Jordan Stall\Jon Toews\Patty Marleau hybrid.....yeah.
And I'm just fine with all of this.
To be fair, Monahan really isn't in contention for the Calder any more. In past seasons maybe, but this year seems to have a really competitive group of rookies and Monohan might not even wind up in the top 5 or 6 in voting.

It would be nice if Backlund hit 20 goals as well. That would be huge for his confidence for next season. Monahan hitting 20 goals is huge, but the more 20 goal scoers Calgary can get the better. Backlund needs 2 more...

Lol six cupcakes....for a top six forward group. Adequate.
I was hopeful he'd stay up with the Flames and bang home 10 goals on the season when he was drafted...kid goes and bangs home 6 in his first 9. Was like "holy ####"

Among the names thrown out: Toews, Staal, Marleau, I think one that should be there is Ron Francis. The Toronto Star article today about Burke suggested the comparison and I think it's a good one. A quiet, steady point producer whose a great leader and plays a two-way game. Francis won the Selke, was a Captain, won the Cup and quietly has some of the highest point totals in NHL history. I don't know that Monahan can touch his career numbers but the style is similar. See the highlight video of Francis below:

Gotta admit though... Phaneuf's 20 is more impressive considering the position he played.
phaneuf was frigin awesome in his rookie year, as well as the next 2 years. wonder if it was that concussion he got against the wings in the playoffs that changed things, the contract and the assumed jump in his role on a team (ie. #1dman) but man has he regressed.
too often i feel offensive dmen are paid by their point totals alone. point totals being a 2nd pairing guy should garner a different price tag than a guy who can get points while playing 1st pairing minutes/opposition.
Ronny Francis is a comparison that gets me really excited, right up there at the top of my all time favourite non-Flame players.

Off topic but IMO it was his hip injuries and the subsequent surgeries.
Watch those Dion highlights from the first couple years and what stands out was his explosiveness. He had great speed, good reaction time, and he was able to use that speed to close down on forwards in order to crush them, while also using that explosiveness to charge up the ice offensively.
Watch him now and he looks immobile and slow, two words you never would have associated with him in those first three seasons.

It was only becuase ovi and crosby was in that same year, or else he'd win the calder hands down.
