The best part with mcgrattan is that he doesn't even need to fight... He's just such a great influence on the bench and in the dressing room with everyone especially the kids.
Don't get me wrong... He's the best enforcer in the league and at this point I don't think anyone can handle him in a fight. But he's become part of the character of this team and I hope he stays with the flames for years to come. The good thing is Burke knows the value of guys like him and Westgarth so I imagine Burke will want to keep around beyond next year.

I agree wholeheartedly, but guys like Grats have a limited shelf-life. You cant keep punching faces in indefinitely.
That said, I think that in a couple seasons from now he might look good in a suit standing next to Marty.

In that case u sign him for 1.5m(I think that's the max contract u can bury in the AHL) for 3 yrs. he's full value for what he brings. And cap floor is going to be a bigger problem then the cap for the near future.

It's strange that it appeared like he had reached the end of his shelf life 3 years ago. He didn't play an NHL game in 2010-11 and it really looked like he no longer had a place in the game.
Now, he's having his best season in the NHL by-far. Most games played, most goals, most points, most shots.
Who knows how many more years he has left in him.

Agree.
More than an enforcer now. Power forward. Leader. Heart and soul. Not a huge liability either.

I think more than anything, Westgarth's presence means McGrattan doesn't have to fight. Why take a beating from the champ when you can challenge his understudy instead?
Anyway, it's funny how the area outside the trapezoid becomes a total no-man's land when McGrattan and Westgarth are on the forecheck. Haven't seen so many guys pull the chute since we had the Tunnel of Death.

Cherry coached him in the ohl, the year he led the team in scoring I think. He's always praising him now.

I don't think he's ever led any team in scoring.

He led Mississauga with 20 goals in 2000-01 - in only 31 games! But that Ice Dogs team was also one of the worst in major junior history: 3-56-7-2.

That is crazy. I was sitting directly behind Westgarth's family at the game last night. I didn't even recognize Cowher. It was really quite sweet because his family was so proud of him when he scored.

I think Westgarth has done enough to earn him another NHL contract somewhere.
It may not be in Calgary, but he'll get another shot.

Just came across this from CBC Hamilton... a 25 minute interview from February where McGrattan talks about substance abuse, fighting, the Tortorella incident and others.

Yeah, he was quite candid in several areas. Especially where he was at when he got to Phoenix and talked about how the only way out was death if he didn't get things turned around.
Partially defended staged fights - and certainly reinforced the point that the players themselves believe fighting can impact the game - but also said some are unnecessary. Said he turns down fights if the situation isn't right. Some here may not like that he also pretty much told anyone who hates fighting to go watch something else.
Recognized when Tortorella lost his mind that there was probably a camera on it, and was trying to prevent anyone from doing something stupid(...er than Tortorella already had) that would embarrass the game.

Love him, and I have always found that the Flames played better with a heavyweight in the lineup (Iginla especially). Having a guy like that in the lineup that can play a regular shift makes the whole lineup tougher

I absolutely love this guy. Always steps up for the rookies... He is an amazing leader and deserves an 'A' on that jersey.
He has a scary "I will hunt you down" face if you try to mess with anybody on the team, primarily the rookies.
