Just started this fascinating book:

http://dataclysm.org/

As we live more of our lives online, researchers can finally observe us directly, in vast numbers, and without filters. Data scientists have become the new demographers.

In this daring and original book, Rudder explains how Facebook “likes” can predict, with surprising accuracy, a person’s sexual orientation and even intelligence; how attractive women receive exponentially more interview requests; and why you must have haters to be hot. He charts the rise and fall of America’s most reviled word through Google Search and examines the new dynamics of collaborative rage on Twitter. He shows how people express themselves, both privately and publicly. What is the least Asian thing you can say? Do people bathe more in Vermont or New Jersey? What do black women think about Simon & Garfunkel? (Hint: they don’t think about Simon & Garfunkel.) Rudder also traces human migration over time, showing how groups of people move from certain small towns to the same big cities across the globe. And he grapples with the challenge of maintaining privacy in a world where these explorations are possible.

One of the founders of OKCupid has gathered huge amounts of data about us from his site, and other dating and social media.

I only read the introduction so far - I learned already there is a big difference in how men and women perceive things. On OKCupid you can rate people from 1 - 5. Men rate women around a standard bell curve at 3. Women rate men around 1.5.

My team and I wrote an app that will apply findings from a recent research paper to your Facebook graph. The app won’t post to your wall but it will show you both the shape of your friend network and which of your friends are most mathematically important to your life.

That is interesting. When I run it I can definitely see the groupings it does. Family are all near the top. Then it seems to be groupings of friends all in "segments". Friends from sports teams are grouped closely, school, etc. even if Facebook doesn't have an explicit relationship listed.

my very first online date/hookup was about 9 years ago using HotOrNot. I went on to POF a couple years later and thought that was the best site at the time. I never had anything more than flings or short term relationships with online dates and all my long term relationships were either met at school, work, or through friends (wife)
