The problem is that you can't keep everyone who has potential, especially goalies.
I think Burke may have had doubts about Berra's mental game. That might not be a coacheable issue.

November 1st vs Red Wings he had a terrible game. Gave up a bunch of bad goals.
In the post game interview he basically said the guys in front of him weren't trying and it was all their fault.
He was sent down immediately to Abbotsford and Berra came up.

So the only trade deadline move today from Burke was to trade Berra for a pick? Anyone know what the pick is yet? Can't be anything but from a later round.
At that point you're better off just to hang on to Berra. I thought his game improved dramatically over the course of the season and that he would have, if nothing else, filled as a stop gap for another year or two for the team.
What a strange day for the Flames. At the end of the day, for me, Burke did NOT get the job done.
