Sure, the guy gets hurt more often than others. Everyone knows that. But when he is healthy, he is can be one of the best offensive threats in the league, and everyone knows that too.
The Kings turned their backup goalie (which they have more of) into a highly skilled scoring winger at only 50% salary. On most days I would consider that a very good deal. For the Kings specifically, they are a big team that is very good at controlling the puck and keeping it out of their own net. They can shelter Gaborik behind bigger, tougher guys to minimize the risk of injury and allow him to focus on the one area they sometimes need help in - scoring goals*.
*At least that is the one area I thought they were lacking in when it came to last year's playoffs. They were able to keep games really tight but they didn't have enough scoring touch to take advantage of their tight defense and superb goaltending.
