Gillis severely underestimated the market for Luongo and since he could never fetch a return that would save his pride he did a selfish thing in trading Schneider just so he could save face and fetch a trade return for the poor situation he put himself into.
The fact that Luongo is suffering mental issues again forcing Torts hands is largely why there wasn't a big market for the guy in the first place at that ridiculous contract. He's soft mentally and not the most technically sound goaltender in the world. Gillis should have accepted that and just moved Luongo for a bag of pucks and moved forward with Schneider but instead the situation is still as bad as it ever was and now that Schneider is gone they really don't have a franchise goaltender in waiting to replace Luongo with. Just a big mess.
