Wow, that series in the highlights at about 3:15.
Sven leads the 3-on-2 and nearly scores; hustles back on the 2-on-1 going the other way and gets the puck back; then joins the 3-on-2 going back and nearly scores again.

There's a couple of reasons I think:
Some of the reason the number is high is because the Heat are one of the least penalized teams in the league. We are the 7th least penalized team in the league so when a goal is scored against us, it hits our number much worse.
We've been on the PK 228 times (lowest in the league is 193, highest is 305) and we've allowed 48 goals (lowest in the league is 29, highest is 63). The league average times on the PK is 249, which we are fairly below, and average number of PP goals is 46 which we are actually on target with.
Plus, our October SUCKED for PK. There's a couple games I can think of in October like the Texas Massacre where we let in 5 PPG in a single game (Brossoit), OKC put 2 in against us (Berra), Lake Erie got 2 (Berra) and that killed our numbers starting the year. If October didn't happen and with our recent streak of 30 odd straight PK kills, I think our numbers would be easily in the top 10.
We also seem to really have difficulties on the Road PK and that tends to get forgotten when we see them play at home and do so well there on the PK. Our Home PK is actually 2nd in the league with 88.8% but on the road it drops to 30th and 70.2%.
These are the actual stats from the AHL (from 02/28 prior to the evening's games) and you can see we are two totally different teams between Home PK and Road PK.

I guess it looked like that to us, but Coach Ward said he thought Baertschi struggled. (video clip interview, pg. 3)

To add to this, the defense is much much better now than it was in October.
People want to look at the numbers of Ortio/Berra and assume Ortio has played much better. Truth of the matter is Berra was one of the few reasons we won anything at the start of the year.
I have never seen a team allow so many back door plays as they did. It was after the Texas Massacre that the defense finally clued in a little bit that they needed to help their goaltenders.
Maybe it was the learning curve with Ramage, Wotherspoon and Sieloff as rookies in the lineup and then not having Breen or Smith due to Breens injury also hurt. Then Smid's acquisition in early November also helped alot with the defensive depth and helped push guys like MacKenzie out of the lineup.

That really surprised me to hear that from Ward.
I mean, Sven didn't do a whole lot in the second period. Barely noticed him. But the first and third periods was all Sven and Max.

Sven was good but he was getting knocked off the puck a little to often .
The three players I liked and can see in flames sweaters for sure are Sven, Max, and Witherspoon.
Fun game to watch but boy the music was loud.

Ward was preaching for more grit and competitiveness (or his new favourite catch phrase, "hard"), so I would expect to see Kremyr or Elson in the lineup. Probably Ramage on the back end as well.

Was this your first Heat game Vulcan?
Just wondering, because the volume of the music is a common complaint. It's like the sound guy doesn't realize it's a smaller building. He's playing the music like it's an NHL arena.
Regarding Sven, I've just come to terms with the fact that Sven will compete hard, but will almost always get knocked off the puck. He needs to get A LOT stronger.

Gaudreau and Sven as wacky roommates on a strength and conditioning plan together over the summer could be the web series of 2014.

It's Joey Mac up against his old team. 1st start since January 25th. Tom McCollum goes for GR. Kremyr is in for McKelvie, Lamb for Billins.

Ramage also in the line-up for Breen who is sick tonight. Back-end in for a test without 2 of their top defenceman.

Heat could either end this weekend in 1st place or 5th place in the Western Conference.
A win in regulation would put us in 1st place. Texas Stars game has been suspended due to poor ice conditions.
If the Heat lose and Chicago wins tomorrow, we will be 5th place.

Scratches: MacKelvie, Breen (flu), Foster, Elson, Sieloff, Ferland, Gillies
Starters:
MacDonald (1st start since Jan 25th)
Wotherspoon-SOB

Emmerson and Fournier both scratched for Grand Rapids. Both a big factor in the GR win last night.

GR puts in a goal, but for the second night they have a goal waived off.
Puck looks like it went on the goal line. Under review.
