Unrestrained liberty is no better than no liberty at all.
Moreover, a measure of unrestrained liberty reduces a corresponding level of the overall liberty of the society.
To repeat a slogan I've used on here before, liberty is something to be optimized, not maximized.

Brick Stone (comic Dave Sirus) ambushes the Westboro Baptist Church again, joining other counter-protestors at Glendale Presbyterian Church, Holy Family Catholic Church, and the Golden Globes with his usual goal of ruining their day.

I hate canned tuna. I hate Ryan Kesler. I hate "insert group here".
The second sense is much, much closer to the first sense than the last.
If I point out the flaws in the comparison I don't see how that's reckless. Not pointing out the flaws is wreckless.
That said:
A) I hate tuna
B) I hate Canucks fans
C) I hate minority
B & C are more alike than A.
There are very big differences. That said, where should the retainer on freedom be?
People will abuse the rhetoric to suit their needs (much like how you used my Kessler example, but ignored the Canuck fans base example, I'm not mad, or offended heck it further proves the point I was making).
Let's remember: photon said he wasn't sure where his opinion fell, someone else said they didn't understand that point of view. I was just explaining it.
There should be laws against hate speech on minorities. I'm glad there is.

This past week a local little girl was apprehended while walking with her friend. She struggled and people saw it and tried to stop the struggle and called 911 and reported the kidnappers license plate number. In a matter of a few hour they found the guy and he had bound the little girl and shot her in the back of the head, and was putting her body in trash bags. The Westboro Baptist Church is picketing her vigil this Saturday because 'God struck her down because he hates gays.'
I am so sickened by this. My family and I are going to be part of the 'human wall' to protect her family members from this compilation of wasted skin.
The little girl's name was Hailey Owens, and she was just 10 years old.
I've never understood their logic whatsoever. So God, in his infinite wisdom, has decided to use rapists, child-molesters, and terrorists as his righteous agents? Surely an omniscient, infallible being could come up with a better plan than that....right?
Don't try to figure out their logic or their attachment to god, there is none in either case. I like to think that when old man Phelps leaves this mortal coil and finds himself in front of god, the first thing god will say is pull my finger.
Then disintegrate him with the unholy fart of incineration.
Is it true this Phelps guy was a Calgarian at one point?
EDIT: Nevermind, looks like his son Nate Phelps lives and works in Calgary and is a vocal supporter of equal rights, and speaks out against his dad's abuse and indoctrination as a kid.
The story about the little girl is just devastating. I can't even get past it to work up any emotions about the Westboro a-holes. That poor little girl and her family, it just makes me feel ill to even think about it.

Yup his son has a pretty amazing story to tell as does the other son Mark

They became non relevent again. The candle light march shows that supporters of Hailey Owens are not going to let a group of bigoted racists from interfering in thier support of the family.

Like I said earlier, they only serve to galvanize the community against them. If their aim is to promote hatred towards gays, they are achieving the exact opposite.

Everyone hates Kessler and the Canucks. Their fan base are ######bags that you just want to punch in the face. They are a bunch of sissies, they deserve everything bad that happens to them and they are the worst thing to happen to the league.
The above statement is something that could conceivably be said around the Saddledome.
Now let's change the nouns.
Everyone hates gays and the LGBTQ community. They are ######bags that you just want to punch in the face. They are a bunch of sissies, they deserve everything bad that happens to them and they are the worst thing to happen to society.
I think we can all agree the second statement it way out of line.
Yet it's the same statement but the target is different.
If one is acceptable and the other isn't, what's the real difference? If we can argue the second statement is wrong and hateful (which it is) then objectively we can argue the first statement is as well.
Hence the slippery slope that photon is alluding to.
Now are fans of a sports team a fair comparator group to the LGBTQ community? I'd argue not, but others may argue any hate against any group is wrong. It's wrong to hate, period. Therefore hate speech would extend to any person or group of people.
All or nothing.
Now I personally believe in degree. But that doesn't mean society will, does or should.
I am sorry but, if you can't tell the difference between people saying the hate the canucks and saying they hate gays..........
They seem to have an extremely limited scope, to separate mourners from protesters. Since the WBC seems to be the only outfit that pickets funerals, it would seem the Patriot Guard were created solely as a response to them.

I agree (as stated in my post) but you also have to admit that if the second amendment can be upheld for automatic assault weapons then the language can be played with.
Someone wanted to know how that play would work, I answered AND disagreed with argument pointing out its flaws.
