I'm not convinced the Stanley Cup playoffs accurately show who is the best team in hockey every year.

You sound like a Canuck fan. There is a reason that the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win in sports.

Not enough talent pool for another two teams.. Can't even imagine one other team, there would be some pretty brutal teams.

I don't think KC would support a hockey team. There is already baseball, football, and soccer here. Football is huge here and the market is getting saturated as soccer is becoming more popular and fighting for that sports dollar.
Maybe it would change if a hockey team was placed here but most people don't care about hockey at all. NFL -> MLB -> MLS/NHL is how I think it would play out here.
P.S. MLS games are a good time if you ever get the chance.

I'm surprised that KC is in the discussion for a team and Oklahoma City isn't. Would be nice to have a team back in Quebec, hopefully they could make it work.

Cities I've heard kicked around most often are Seattle and Vegas. Eager people with money AND the promise of new buildings.

If Quebec and Seattle come in and pick 1-2 in the McDavid Eichel draft that would be so brutal. Never mind the ####ty expansion draft, if I recall correctly we were forced to trade Giguere or lose him for nothing last time around.
|
Only going by memory, but isn't it usually the case that expansion teams draft last, not first?
Hardly fair to let new teams walk in and go right to the front of the line.
I do recall that Winnipeg drafted last in 1979 (and took the awesome Jimmy Mann ) for sure.
And I do not recall any expansion team ever drafting first.

Yeah, sorry, it's 2014.. not 1967 or 1991. The talent pool is HUGE now.
This argument is lame.

I think both make sense. I really think the only possibilities for expansion are in the west (due to the new alignment). I think you are right that Seattle and Vegas are the top 2 options, after that I think they have KC and Portland as possibilities.

agreed. with all the players coming in from overseas it has more or less doubled the talent pool the NHL can draw from compared to back in the day.

Re-alignment this year couldn't have been more half-assed. This becomes especially true if there is any intention of putting an expansion team in Quebec in the next few years. Unless they are putting three expansion teams in the west or Florida is heading east or something. Either way, very little thought went into it in either short or long term.

Whenever serious expansion talk comes up, in any sport, I always try to imagine what kind of team name/mascot the new franchise could come up with.
Seattle has the Mariners, Seahawks, Sounders (reference to Puget Sound) and formerly the Super Sonics (reference to Aircraft industry). The Thunderbirds are the WHL team and I would think that would not be the way to go. It's hard to come up with a good original name IMO.
Kansas City? Chiefs, Royals are there. Kings are now in Sacramento. Blades was the IHL team (LAME). Scouts (LAME) became the Rockies (Awesome) and then the Devils (Awesome).
Las Vegas? Stars is taken but seems natural. Gamblers? Who wants to use an old USFL name??
I would love to hear some suggestions!

I think if LV gets a team, the name "wranglers" would be viable, wasnt that their name when they were the flames ECHL team?

When Seattle was in the old pro WHL, their name was the Totems. Could be recycled.

I don't think the Las Vegas Wranglers team that is still playing would appreciate an NHL team using the same name

Only thing is the politically correct crowd will be all over that name, although is pays tribute and respect to a heritage it also is too close to a very sore spot with millions of people and of course the media who likes to create stories. imo would not be a go with the league.
