F###ing.

Gravity.

The only people that movie should have legitimately thrilled are those who've never seen the (literally) hundreds of space films it borrows from. Zero originality in the story. Visuals are the only treat, but for people who know and love sci-fi, it gets stale, and fast.

And I don't care what people say anymore, I didn't like the Avengers. Had okay entertainment value upon first viewing, but such a stupid story, cheesy lines left right and center, a poor flimsy villain character that wasn't intimidating (and was already a villain prior to it!), generic and easily killed aliens, half the movie spent on a stupid ####ing invisible floating craft that ultimately fails anyways. Too many little hat tips to fanboys and not enough quality writing. More overrated than Avatar, because somehow many people actually loved it and weren't honest enough to see through to all the crap.

I have a feeling Cap 2 will follow in the same footsteps. They're promising it will be Marvel's best so far.. sure. CGI already looks bad in it, and the villain does not look menacing at all. But even IF it stinks, people will probably still fool themselves into thinking it was awesome anyways out of their love for the hero. But we'll see..

Gravity was a letdown script/story wise for sure. The survive against all odds arc could have worked much better if some subtly was used, but I still really enjoyed the film. It's the kind of movie that at least for me that stays with you even given the flaws.

I thought Fight Club was a stupid movie and a waste of time. 4-4.5/10

JUNO was the biggest pile of tripe I have ever seen in my life. What an awful excuse of a film. Atrocious.

Could not believe the accolades it got. Such a good year for movies too. Dialogue was painful. Blech.

I tend to prefer movies with substance, and some point to the movie instead of movies with a couple of memorable lines in otherwise forgettable films.

Give me movies like "The Man Who Would Be King", "City of God", "Downfall", "Das Boot", "Chinatown", "The Fisher King" or about 2-300 others before ones like those two.

while those movies you mentioned were good, Fight Club and Big Lebowski are much more than movies with a couple of comparable lines. When you say things like that it makes you look a little bit silly, it's picking at things that aren't even true.

I can see someone not liking either if you're a serious person or prefer different stories but saying they were just a couple memorable lines is ridiculous, the characters they created were interesting and memorable. If you don't like it try a critique that actually has reason to it otherwise it's a little childish.

As for comedies, Pineapple Express. What a pile of crap, I couldn't even finish it.

And yeah, MI:4 was bad, other than the Burj Khalifa scenes. Very cheesy. I preferred the feel of MI:3 way, way more. It didn't feel like a light hearted family friendly attempt at comedy/action.

Nothing is/was worse than MI2. It seems no one liked that movie anyway, but yeesh what happened? Another bad Tom Cruise movie everyone seems to like would be A Few Good Men (along with Top Gun).

Fight club had a twist in that Edward Norton's character was actually Brad Pitt that had not been done before that if I recall correctly. Otherwise it wasn't really noteworthy in my mind. There was no moral musing to dwell over and you were not left with anything to consider. Just this guy who fights with other people in an underground boxing club.

The big lebowski just had a loudmouth moron and his moron friends go through an adventure. Not really groundbreaking or departing from any previous model of movie, just a different group of characters. While the actors did a good job of portraying the characters, it wasn't really exceptional at all. It's similar to Heath Ledger's performance in the dark knight. The movie sucked, but his performance was good. That doesn't make the big lebowski good, just it had good performances.

Criticizing something that you might like isn't childish, it's a difference of opinion. I thought they were pointless, you did not. That's fine. It's also the point of this thread.

Not sure if these count as universally beloved but I hate A Christmas Story, Fargo and Lost In Translation with every fibre of my being.

Surprised at how many people here hated Lost In Translation. I was working at a job that kept me out of town a lot when that came out, and when I saw it it hit me like a 10 ton truck. The loneliness, longing for a connection to someone, culture shock and the feelings of a life going on without you totally hit close to home. Loved that movie.
