Good idea. Anything lower and she'd take it as a joke (ie. McDs). If she's ok with swiss chalet, definitely a keeper

A friend of mine was in the same spot. I was out in Trenton, ON visiting him and it happened to be his wife's birthday weekend, so we went to Boston Pizza with a few of their friends. We were absolutely forbidden by her from telling the waitress that it was her birthday. So I wrote it on my phone with an arrow pointing at her and made sure it was visible next time the waitress came by.

Mission accomplished.

I think some pictures of the two of you would help us.

Seems that the dick in the box idea is out......I am assuming that you have made her a nice dinner at your house?

How about have a chef come to the house for a private thing and then go to the basement of chicken on the way - but be nice and draw the names of two lucky CP posters to take with you as male escorts.......

I've found that 90% of restaurants will give you a free desert. This is a great way of figuring out whether the woman is a keeper or not.

A good woman will appreciate your ingenuity and a GREAT woman will appreciate the fact that you saved $8 on a piece of cheesecake. If she's put off by it, then it's time to find a new woman.
Was this a joke that I missed? That is easily the worst idea I have ever heard. There is no ingenuity in lying and nothing to appreciate when deceiving in order to get something for free.

What you should do is order lots of double drinks, especially with lots of cranberry and gin. When she goes to the bathroom, refill her wine as well.

La Piccola Napoli would be my suggestion. Its closer than Pasquale's, and the food is excellent. Never been there on Valentines Day (sucker!), but they might even have some live saxophonist or something like that then. I've been other nights where they have. I would phone right away though because its a smaller restaurant and might be hard to get a table that night.

Taking my wife to The Living Room for Valentines, they are planning a four course meal. Supposed to be up in their site by the end of the week.

Great spot!

To steer this thread back to how not to do something special...

1) my buddy was an investment banker, so loved money. Had his first gf at age 23. Wouldn't let his girl pay for anything. I thought it was funny cuz she came from money, so didn't have the same attraction to it as he he did. Anyways, one day he forgot his wallet at home while they were out for brunch, so she paid. He offered to pay her back, but she wouldnt have any of it. That night she slept over, and the next morning (sunday) he had to be at work by 8am (investment banking). And he didn't feel right letting her pay for brunch so he left her a couple bills on her night table. She woke up to an empty bed with money on the night stand. Hilarity ensues

2) I took my girl to laurier lounge for fondue for two. I proceeded to order fondue for two. She was not impressed that "I told her what to eat." She said it was chauvinistic. I just laughed it off cuz I'm totally not chauvinistic; instead i told to her to stop being such a little child, and suggested she was probably being moody cuz she was on the rag. Hilarity ensues.

I do like the flower idea i will have to get ahold of the manager and see if i can't drop off something small for them to put at the table
You've already done stuff like that? Man, setting that bar pretty high. What are you going to do for your 1 year anniversary? You can't use all the good ideas right at the start, you have to save some and use them at need, not will. ;p

I'm from out of town, and make frequent trips there for games. (often resulting in staying an extra day or two). Always up for trying new and interesting places to dine. I'm a little surprised that I haven't seen Q Haute mentioned at all. Been there 3 times, and been impressed every time. It's definitely pricey, but for those special occasion/splurges, it's amazing.

Does anyone know of a fine dining experience in the city, where there is live music? (pianist, jazz ensemble, etc...)

Also, on the music 'note' . . . (to the OP's inquiry for ideas) . . . if you and your partner have a special 'song', or artist that's kind of 'yours', see if the restaurant you choose will play it for you during your time there. Not everywhere will do this, but seriously . . . it's an amazing touch!

Rush is great, you could call ahead and ask for the "Chef's table", watch them cook your meal.

Some places the chef's table is only for larger groups, you would likely have to call Rush and ask what their policy on it. Not all chef's tables are like on Hell's Kitchen.

Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve are the two biggest ripoffs in the restaurant business. The places are packed, it's generally a tasting menu (that's designed to be cheap to produce, and easy to bang out quickly), and the whole experience is just set-up to separate you and your money as quickly as possible, as there's another seating behind you.

Do yourselves a favour and avoid eating out on Valentine's Day like the plague. Tell your sweetie that you'd much rather go for a more relaxed dinner a few days before or after, when a restaurant can give you their best. Midweek in late February is pretty much graveyard time in the restaurant industry, and I guarantee you'll get far better food and service than you ever would on Valentine's Day.

If you are forced out on the actual day, just hit your local pub, with the promise of a real date in the very near future.
