keep him playing and away from temptation...
Probably more to do with Burke not being a fan when he had him in Anaheim and moving him to TB for a first when the GM in TB was no other than...Jay Feaster!

Flames have removed O'Brien's equipment from the locker room. Pretty good indicator he will go to Abbotsford if not claimed

Randy Sportak @SUNRandySportak
#Flames put D Shane O'Brien on waivers. Was minus-3 last night, didn't play 3rd period and equipment wasn't in locker today.

But it also potentially helps their cap situation to send him down (assuming he is still down there next year as well). He would still count against the cap, well part of his salary anyway, and they are really going to have a very tough time getting to the floor.
I think they are just trying to see if there's any interest in O'Brien or they are just trying to wake him up. He was actually not bad except on that Nashville game. I don't think they will send him to Abbotsford even if he clears.

Could it be a MacDermid type situation where the team that wants him as a depth guy wants to be able to send him down? (Couldn't imagine anyone taking him without sending salary back though)

I wonder if reacted badly to being scratched when Russell returned? He was brutal last night but seems a bit odd to send him down instead of just sitting in the press box.

I've said all along that the Sarich and Obrien swap was a terrible one. Just laughable that there were some who claimed we won this trade.

Every player in that deal is overpaid. It was teams trading bad contracts. Everyone understands that. At least most do

Cammalleri was skating with the team yesterday, so there's a good chance he'll be back for the Chicago game, which means someone needs to go down to make room on the roster.

Other than the goalies, I believe everyone on the roster right now needs to clear waivers to be sent down. So, they likely don't want to expose Street, Jones, or Byron to waivers right now.

Not surprising at all... I honestly think Feaster didn't even watch SOB play before signing him, he's probably one of the worst d men in the NHL and does even bring any 'toughness/grit' to any team. Plus he's friends with Kevin Bieksa.

I don't mind the Tanguay/Jones swap. I don't want a pouter like Tangs around while we rebuild, not a great role model for the young guys. Jones is overpaid, and although he seems to have hands of stone he provides a solid effort every shift. Plus Tanguay has been injured most of the year and his shootout success has been effectively replaced by Colborne and Monahan. But the Sarich/O'Brien swap sucks.

Gio's physical game is just fine, he might not have a lot of open ice, crushing checks like Dion, but he's still quite physical.

The thing for me is that Tanguay is such a prima donna that it was hard to judge his trade value. Was he worth anything or did we need to include Sarich to make a deal. All I know now is that IMO Sarich is way better than SOB and I don't dislike Jones. It will be interesting to see the next move.

He seems like a bit of an idiot. I wouldn't be surprised if this has more to do with attitude and not having him influencing young players on the big club than his piss poor on ice play. He was rumoured to be openly mailing it in last season after the Avs were out. Maybe the minors will fix that attitude.

He is like Cale Hulse withhout the likability and positive attitude..

Yeah particularly if they didn't want Tanguay around for the rebuild. But I don't think you could get anything for any of these players except other bad contracts. They all have essentially negative value

I think it was a wash.

Tanguay is useless as he ages, he does not have the skills to play a bottom 6 role and he's declined too much to play top 6. At least Jones can be plugged in anywhere.

Sarich is the better dman for sure though, sob without the toughness is basically a fatter slower Chris Butler.

For me Jones > Tanguay and Sarich > SOB

A 50-60 point winger at 3.5m per year should've gotten more than buyout candidates. That's it in a nutshell IMO

50-60 points with first line and pp time and playing with the best guys on the team is pretty terrible imo. Especially when you don't play a 2 way game.

I agree. There is no way Tanguay had negative trade value.
