I won't be surprised one bit if Dubnyk posts great numbers in Nashville. He'll never be an elite goaltender, but he's good. He'll flourish in Nashville, now that he'll have an actual defense to work with for the first time in his NHL career.
Shameful tankjob by the Oilers. Can't say I'm too surprised though.

First the Smid deal, now this. If I didn't hate Edmonton so much i'd feel bad, almost.

it takes skill to trade a goalie having as bad a season as Dubnyk, and have your own fan base universally hate the deal

Yeah I don't see the point of making this trade unless they were really high on Hendricks or if they needed to free up a little cap room to make another deal.

If Nashville can make Carter Hutton look good, they'll make Dubnyk look great

I don't see this as particularly terrible for Edmonton. Dubnyk wasn't going to be able to succeed there; goaltenders' value is low across the board; and more picks and prospects aren't going to help. Hendricks' contract seems heavy now, but will be more manageable as the cap increases in the near future; furthermore, he provides the toughness and work ethic the Oilers lack, and may be able to influence some of the slackers.
Also, you're crazy if you think Edmonton's through making moves. Could be setting up something else.

3 years left (including this year) at $6.3 million per year.
I guess Ward would be a short term fix. I don't think that's what the Oilers really need eating up their cap...

Now now, that's not true. Every fan base is like that when their team has stuggled for a while. It comes from figuring your management has no clue what they are doing.
Flames fans in here are like that too. Scared when Feaster was given the reigns, constantly questioning whether he had what it takes and if he was the man for the job. Then we can him and people freak out about the change, worried that Feaster finally had this going in the right direction, and why ruin that. Typical fan base reaction, affraid of changing the status quo, no matter how bad the status quo is.

Lol our old friend mud crutch 79 is a fan of the deal
RT @mc79hockey: Matt Hendricks has a lower career pts/gm than Georges Laraque. AND IS SIGNED FOR FOUR YEARS.

I don't think Edmonton really lost this one. Oilers lost a crappy goaltender and gained some bottom line grit, something they were lacking. Sure, Henricks' contract sucks, but so did Dubnyk's.
I actually think, on a game-to-game basis, this makes Edmonton slightly tougher to play against.

whether they make another trade this won't be the 'set up'
Dubnyk was a UFA who was gone at the end of the year, send him to the minors or put him on waivers to create a space
don't take back a terrible contract with negative value
the only way this makes sense is if they team they want a goalie from desperately wanted Hendricks

If it were any sports team in the world but the Oilers, you might have a point here, but...

Would've thought they'd pick up a D in pretty much any trade they'd make. Has to be something more here or it doesn't make much sense, especially with the Oilers picking up some of Dubynk's salary. Then again, it is the Oilers so.....

Really don't think Dubnyk is that bad of a goalie, he's had flashes of being solid. And when Justin Schultz is playing roughly 25 minutes a game, you can't really blame him too much.

Fair value trade, honestly. A mediocre backup goaltender isn't worth much more than an offensively-challenged fourth liner.
That said, 'grit' can be acquired for far less, as we showed a couple weeks ago.

Just like the Smid deal was part of something bigger?
This is just a horrible deal, plain and simple. MacTavish and Lowe are autistic.

If I was an Oilers fan, I would be more concerned about the age and remaining term. Hendricks is 32 and and will be 35 when his contract is done. That would the painful part.

If they make another deal to acquire a goalie, then this is a decent trade. But if this it it, they're in trouble

If the retained salary part is true, then very impressive GMing by Polie
Got rid of his worst player, and filled his teams biggest hole, without spending a cent or an asset
Props
