Dunno what to tell you, it was always something that was impressed on us growing up, and you hear it echoed a lot in sports, not just by Cherry (whom I usually don't agree with).
Why do you think most of the hockey players (and basketball players) do dress up on game day? Obviously it has to come from somewhere.
The reason being you want to represent yourself, your team (school) and city with pride. Also get yourself into the mindset of being there for a purpose, not just to have a good time.
I guess I can't argue that a suit might more sense in a economic setting than a sports one, but like I said, a lot of players and coaches seem to agree, and 'professional' means a lot more than just a doctor or lawyer or stockbroker.
