Actually Phaneuf would be a terrible fit for the Blues - a structured team with a system that relies on hockey sense and smart puck decisions.
Situation does mean a lot...so does fit.

and Jaybo on the Leafs? would probably look like Jaybo on the Flames
and Jaybo could have got a massive contract too if he didn't decide to sign a year early for some reason

Totally agree - Bouwmeester wouldn't look good on the Leaves at all. That team is a defensive black hole though in terms of structure.
Bouwmeester did take a discount but he seems like the kind of guy who values stability over extra dollars. He was probably happy to finally be in a situation where his skillset was wanted and appreciated. Not to mention being on a contender finally and multiple shots at a Cup.

I think Bouwmeester was happy to submit to a lesser role and lower pay cheque. He seems content to be the number 2 guy, and in a situation where that role is clearly laid out he is excelling. Being in a market where hockey is clearly not the top game also helps too I think. The second he has pressure on him to be the man he's uncomfortable. He's the type who needs comfort which he never really had in Calgary.
Phaneuf is the opposite he wants to be the man. But he has had issues filling that role. But I don't see him ever being a guy who would accept limitations and take less to be on a better team. Ultimately that might be what results in a career of playing on mediocre teams.

Phaneuf is the captain of the Leafs, the Leafs' #1 defenseman, and despite his flaws is a defenseman who can anchor a defensive pairing or be the featured defenseman in a top 4 pairing. The prevailing philosophy seems to be that it's not easy replacing a capable top 4 defenseman, and cap room permitting, it's better to re-sign a guy who has proven to be a good fit than to let them hit the market.

You know if you could take Bouwmeester's skating and overall game and add Phaneuf's willingness to be the man/slapshot and you would have a Norris candidate instead of two very good but flawed defensemen.

completely agreed.
Bouwmeester should be applauded for taking less money (he could have easily got more on the open market) but chose to stay on a team where he would be the #2 guy, and has a very good role on a great team. He will also not be under any kind of magnifying glass, as he was under his previous, large contract.
Phanuef on the other hand is now being paid as the #1 guy, and will be the go to scapegoat. That being said, regardless of one's performance/value, how many people would be willing to make $x/year now, and then be willing to continue employment for less going forward?
does this deal have any sort of no-movement clause?

This is a relatively small raise... His caphit was 6.5 mil/year since 2008.
Now take into account how much the salary cap has risen since then and will continue to rise over the next 7 years and it seems a little silly how everyone is making fun of this contract. The salary cap is not static and neither is market value.

Bouw would have probably taken less money here in Calgary for stability (same contract STL offered). He's just that kind of guy. Quiet and shy.

One of main stumbling blocks in Phaneuf negotiation was determining # of teams on acceptable trade list. It's more than 10.

Let's be honest, it's just "Not Edmonton".
You know they've been holding off on getting this signed so that it would be on 24/7.

Leafs spending big money locking up a mediocre core. They'll never be challengers paying that cast of characters that kind of scratch.
