You should have an outdoor venue if you're going to host an outdoor game, but that didn't stop Vancouver.
It makes sense to postpone the Heritage Classic rather than hosting it only a couple of months after Winnipeg hosts the Grey Cup. There's no sense in hosting two big "once a decade" type events that close together.
I wonder if this also means they're looking at having the Heritage Classic in November rather than February. There's a slightly better chance for nicer weather at an outdoor game in November than February in Winnipeg.

No, but several times a year they have to travel to Edmonton, which is just Saskatoon on a bigger scale.

The Mystery Alaska rink was built on the quary in Canmore. Could easily be done again! A real life Mystery Alaska would be awesome. Flames should host the Rangers. Oh man.

So the real reason is why exactly? Can't secure dates? In an outdoor stadium in Canada between January and March?
Just a guess but I can't imagine there's a scheduling conflict between AC/DC, Metallica, and a Papal visit for weekend in Feb 2016.
A check of the stadium website for this next stretch of time shows "One Direction" as the only event listed on the calendar of events, and it's in July.
I think they know they can't sell the game out is the likely scenario. With the Grey Cup in late November which are attended mainly by locals, asking locals to again shell out another wad of money in that small market a few months later to try and fill the stadium again, is a lot to ask.

Snark aside, yes, as serious as Getbak was above. I don't doubt that they probably realized after announcing it a year ago, that they got feedback from Bombers ticket holders and the general public that they weren't going to get people paying an average of $200 per ticket X 40000+ tickets for two winter events in 3 months. People would choose one or the other, but not both.
Wrangling the local sponsors required for a large portion of both events would be an issue, to outlay that sort of $ in a 3 month time frame as well.
Whatever it is, you really think it was the lack of an available/suitable date holding this back from going forward? The place is as inhabitable as McMahon or the stadium in Regina is in the winter no matter how much nicer it is.

The NHL wants it to be hosted in December, The Bombers and the CFL said February. The Bombers were okay with February, as long as the NHL paid for heating during the winter (not going to happen). Now it will be December 2016. Do I think it is stupid, of course, but that's the reality. It has nothing to do with being able to afford it. Standard garbage argument from a clueless outsider.

Exactly. So why punish them further?

December seems like a poor time to hold it, IMO.

Looks like the Heritage Classic will not be played in Winnipeg in 2016. They are hoping to have it in 2017 instead.
OT but, they're giving us the Oilers and Wild? What the ####. I guess the Flames are too good to play preseason games here.

Mr. Friedman said it was because 2016 is the 100th Anniversary of the NHL, and Toronto will get the game.

Winterpeg is a perfect setting for an outdoor game. Makes perfect sense and it was only a matter of time before they got an outdoor game.

Which is rather dumb since the 100th anniversary of the NHL (and the Leafs) is 2017. The 2016-17 season would be the 100th season, counting the cancelled one though.

The Habs 100th anniversary lasted about 5 years.

Ok, and? Pointing out that Montreal did dumb things doesn't make the dumb things Toronto does any less dumb.

Just found this - more clearly makes the point:
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/3...016-world-cup/
16. Winnipeg’s decision to back away from the Heritage Classic next season brings added intrigue to the NHL’s plans for 2016-17. That is the league’s 100th anniversary; both Ottawa and Toronto want the event then. Could Winnipeg be added to that mix, or will the Jets (and Manitoba) have to wait?
