If it was NFL talent with CFL rules I'd be in sports heaven.

CFL is unwatchable and only Women and Saskatchewan seem to care about it.

Personally I like the NHL and CFL equally, followed by MLB, then NFL and long way back NBA, but i am from Saskatchewan so take it for what its worth. End of the day, it is entertainment, so if it's a good game worth watching i am in. I do find the atmosphere at Stamps games to be better then Flames games though, I think its more of a party at Stamps with the tailgating and the crowd does seem to be more involved at most football games.

Love how OP started the exact same thread on other boards to troll.

Example (i'll let you guess the board)

Quote:
Just curious, but how popular are the Canucks compared with the BC Lions in Vancouver? The lions have won more titles and seem to get great crowds. I always thought the city cared about both teams equally. Thoughts?

Calgary is a hockey town, it isn't even questionable. You just have to look at the headlines, the ticket availability, the jersey sales, how much people are willing to spend, fan interaction. Everything is Flames first, all others second.

I don't know, maybe we can ask the fellas over at CalgaryBall what they think?
Well I do know it's a hockey town but I think Football (even though I don't find it entertaining) is extremely popular here. Maybe it's just the guys I know but everyone and their dog seems to be hardcore NFL fans. The NFL pools reach 500k while the NHL pools struggle to reach 20k. Sure the NFL is once a week but even Saturday night hockey pools don't do that well.

And you can get a ticket to any game you want for the Calgary Flames this year. And the majority for less than face value. This isn't 2005-06.

I've lived in Calgary my whole life and outside of a 5 year window starting in 04 I've always thought we were an overrated hockey town.

People arent hardcore NFL fans, they just enjoy gambling. The NFL has such well designed gambling and fantasy games. There are so many fas that might sort of have a team but really their fantasy team or picks are far more important. Its kind of like saying you are a hardcore college basketball fan just because you filled out a bracket. So the NFL's popularity is really a byproduct of peoples love of gambling rather than a real passion.

Disagree, I know lots of guys(including myself) that either hang out at the pub or lock the wife in the basement on sundays.

Can you imagine how stupid it would be if a league gave you a point for losing a game? It would be the only league in the world to give out points for losing.

Well why don't they like gambling on the NHL? Or are NFL fans just massive gamblers? I think you guys aren't giving the NFL enough credit. They're huge in Calgary and across Canada.

I don't buy it at all. There are passionate football fans in Calgary.

NFL has always been a huge gambling sport, though. When I walk into NFL related conversation or talk to "hardcore" NFL fans, I find that most of the "hardcore-ness" of NFL fans is based around the gambling aspect.

I could be wrong, but I just find that most guys that are big into NFL, aren't big into NFL and then because of this they end up gambling on it also. I find that most of those guys are big into the NFL because of the gambling.

I mean how do most NFL conversations go? "Oh man, so and so went down, and I picked that team to win". "Yeah, my picks are still looking good because of this and that" "Man, I hope team X wins, I have this much riding on them".

Then on Sunday, they get together and talk about nothing except how every play/game affects their picks, and they are really cheering for their picks.

Where as with the NHL, I find most fans are fans because they love to just sit down and watch the game of hockey. You get a little bit of the pool talk, but that's more for bragging rights at the end of the season than the "I'm watching this game to cheer for me hopefully winning money" aspect of NFL.

I am definitely not a CFL fan. If someone says "did you watch the football game?" I automatically assume they mean the Sunday/Monday nighter.

That being said, I don't want it gone either. And I pray Toronto does not get an NFL franchise. Not only would that kill the CFL but I don't jump on the "Canada's team" bandwagons that are the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Blue Jays.

Imagine how much more annoying Toronto would be with an NFL franchise? *shudder*

NFL is more popular than CFL, but people go to the CFL games and cheer for the Stamps because we have no NFL option. NHL is the strongest sport in this city by a mile. I didn't live here during the 04 run but I was downtown at Flames Central for the 100th Grey Cup and sure it was packed, but the streets weren't. Not like I remember seeing in 04 on tv.

Hell I played minor football for 5 years which used CFL rules, and my team for 5 years was called the Stampeders. I'll watch in August before NFL pre-season starts, I'll catch the odd Fri/Sat Stamps game if they're doing well, but it's nowhere near the same thing.

The point is not for missing a field goal. The point is for preventing the opponent from leaving the endzone. It provides a tactical decision for the returner on giving up a point and most likely getting a better starting position or attempting to leave the endzone and most likely getting a horrible starting position.

Contrast this with the NFL where a field goal miss likely results in a dead ball and most kickoffs result in a touchback as there is not much incentive for the returner to exit the endzone.
