The Flames left the door open for Monahan to go until the camp roster was announced and then closed it once it was announced.

They also said if he was playing above 15 minutes a night he would not be going. He has been playing big minutes and contributing in most games so it would be detrimental to send him at this point. Three weeks of facing inferior competition just so we can watch him over the holidays may not be best for our entertainment but it is best for his development facing nhl players. I don't know why everyone thinks the flames management gets as bitter as a high school girl over stuff like this.

*mostly talking about the complaining on HFboards and the flames website not you*

Would have liked to see him in the wjhc for purely selfish reasons. Either decision is likely more than fine for his development so hopefully he can get back to playing key minutes for the flames soon.

Not sure how I feel about this. The kid has unreal talent and has proven he can compete with the big boys in the NHL.

I'm trying to figure out Calgary's logic behind this, I forsure thought they would release him. I'm not trying to be controversial but the Flames won't be making the play-off's this year I don't see how it could possibly hurt him or the team.

Maybe I'm just angry he won't help team Canada dominate this year.

^ maybe they felt his development was better served playing with and against the best players in the world. Which many would agree with.

Nothing really to try and figure out... Feaster said Sean is a contributing member of the Flames. He's 2nd on the team in scoring, and is playing well over 15 minutes a night.

Same reasons Toronto didn't release Rielly.

I'm good with the decision. Think it's the right move.

I can't imagine that had anything to do with it and if it was then Feaster and co. are dumber than even I thought.

This decision better have been 100% for hockey reasons and 100% based on what was best for Monahan. It should have nothing at all to do with anything that happened to other players.

I can't imagine any team or GM being that petty when it comes to something like this. Especially with Burke there and his history of knowing how hard it is to put together these kinds of teams.

No doubt he'll make some kind of canned statement to the effect of, "Would've been nice but main commitment is to the Flames blah blah blah".

When Canada doesn't send its best, it's hard to expect them to do well.
Perhaps they did ask him and he said he'd rather stay and they are biting the bullet to avoid any potential backlash.

It would hurt the team because he's one our best centres. It would hurt the fans (and season ticket holders in particular) because he's one of the reasons to watch the Flames in a pretty dismal year

I was fairly convinced they weren't going to release him. I thought there might be a small chance now that he got injured to use it as a conditioning stint but it still makes sense to keep him up with the big club.

Me too! He can't be much worse than o'brien at this point don't know if it will happen with his injuries lately. You never know though he's been moving up through the leagues pretty quickly.

Feaster does bring up a good point in regards to the message it sends to the rest of the team if you send him. He's one of the better players and if you let him take off for 6-7 games, it basically tells the rest of the guys that winning isn't the goal for the team...

Agreed. This is the only reason not to send him, can't risk a losing culture sinking in to the team.

Glad to hear... If team canada doesn't want to even invite our other guys like poirier, jankowski, or Klimchuk then why would we let them have Monahan?

I've liked Steinberg's tweets on the subject

Pat Steinberg ‏@Fan960Steinberg 2 Dec
@lummer1 You're telling me playing against B rate nations and rolling them up is better than playing NHL teams?

Pat Steinberg ‏@Fan960Steinberg 8h
@YYCHockeyfan911 Still think it's more valuable to return to the team he's already helping to lead. #Flames

@Zester76 He's injured and had proven the NHL, and nowhere else, is where he belongs. How is that horrible? #Flames

Impressive? Has he recovered from his infection yet?

Any news on Sieloff's current status would be appreciated.
