I am so happy to see Okkervil River's 'The Silver Gymnasium' get some attention. It is one of their finest works to date.
I also loved Deerhunter's 'Monomania', BellX1's 'Chop Chop', Mark Lanegan's 'Imitations' and Kanye West's 'Yeezus' (as well as The National and Vampire Weekend, as others have listed).
Also, of note, Toad The Wet Sprocket released their first new record in many years 'New Constellation'. Not their best work, but great to have them back.

Can someone explain the appeal of the Arctic Monkeys to me? I find them rather dull.
Have you listened to any of their earlier stuff? If I were you I would listen to Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and Favourite Worst Nightmare in order to gain a better appreciation for Humbug, Suck It And See and AM.

Am going to pick up Okkervil River's stuff simply based on Sheff's association with Shearwater's early work...which I adore.
Saw Toad's new CD the other day and almost picked it up blind. Honestly, one of THE best shows I've ever seen circa 1991 @ The University of Redlands Amphitheater in Redlands, CA. Glenn Phillips is a poet.

If any one is interested in Burial, he released a new EP last night. Gorgeous music from him, again, sure to sneak into some yet to be compiled 'best of the year' lists:

Shearwater also just released a new album. I believe it is all covers. I heard some of it and it sounded great, but I haven't picked it up yet. They are touring in the new year, and I am going to do my best to see them.
Funny you say Toad is one of the best shows you've seen. I have never seen them live, but I have heard this from a few people, including a friend of mine who used to own a nightclub that hosted live music (and who wasn't a fan 'til he saw them live). Toad is currently touring through the US, and I've written to see if they're coming to my neck of the woods (B.C.). I really want to see them.

First of all, thank you for letting mt know about the Okkervil River album. I was a big fan of The Stage Names and The Stand Ins. Lost a bit of interest after Black Sheep Boy, but quite excited to listen to The Silver Gymnasium.
I have lost total interest in The National and Vampire Weekend over the last few years. Their music just doesn't excite me anymore and I didn't bother to download the newest albums. I have heard lots of Vampire Weekend on the radio but haven't heard any of Trouble will follow. I still listen to Aligator and Boxer every once in awhile but totally lost interest after High Violet.
Most of my favourites from the past year have been mentioned already, but a few that I have not seen are:
The Courteeners - Anna
White Lies - Big TV
Editors - The Weight of your love

There is a band called Vampire Weekend? lol. I am so out of touch with mainstream music.
Very little on these lists are mainstream music outside of second hand clothing stores and one off coffee shops. Nobody else has ever heard of most of these bands either.

Vampire Weekend's Modern Vampire's of the City is an amazing album by one of my favourite bands.
Huge Knife fan as well, and their latest album Shaking the Habitual was great. They really have some strange stuff but I always end up liking it and Karin's voice is so cool.
Love Kanye's new album, he is always extremely creative with his production. I love how he produces music, as a lyricist I think he is OK, not great, but OK.
Reflektor by Arcade Fire is amazing, and to be honest I like it more than Suburbs, I know I am in the minority there.
Shulasmith by Polica was a great album as well.
Still not on board with Haim, maybe I need to give it more time, but just haven't found them all that interesting.
Thanks for the lists Troutman!
