If they didn't have to pay MacLean, Cherry and Cole the big salaries then they wouldn't be cash strapped. I'm sure poaching Jim Hughson from Sportsnet wasn't cheap either.
Surprised you guys are pro CBC. Anyone else find it unfair that Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa all get their games televised on Sat night but only one western game is televised? So if I live in the lower mainland I have to buy Centre Ice to watch the Flames because cbc plays God and determines which western team is worthy enough to be televised? This smells bad.

cbc hockey holds a place in my heart that schmaltzy timmys and canadian tire ads can't ever occupy.

I'm confused, you seem to be concerned about the CBC's profit lines, but then you seem to want them to do things (like cover more small market Western games) that that are actually bad from a bottom line perspective.
What exactly is your angle here?

Why exactly would Mark Lee be calling Olympic hockey? He's pretty much 3rd in line at CBC (maybe 4th now as Rick Ball has been getting a lot of games this year)...why would he suddenly jump to the front of the pack? The only thing he would be calling is that crucial Kazakstan vs. Italy relegation match up.

And if memory serves me, the "problem" started exactly the same time Rob Kerr started as the new pbp guy. In my opinion this isn't a matter of Sportsnet not being able to fix a problem, it's a matter of them making a conscious decision that having this slight delay is somehow beneficial to the viewing experience.
I don't know why they do that, maybe they feel Rob needs the extra 1-2 seconds? I really have no clue, but it doesn't make any sense to think that this is some mysterious problem that this billion dollar company hasn't been able to/has chosen not to fix over the course of 2+ years.

Maybe CBC can keep the rights but do a desperately needed refresh? Howie Meeker and Peter Puck (the original, not the one from a couple of seasons ago) were fine in their time, but I'm glad they're not on every Saturday still. Getting rid of Cherry and injecting something fresh into the proceedings would be welcome. Rebuild, retool -- call it whatever you want, CBC.

But since you bring it up, I guarantee the deal made for the NHL rights will be NPV / ROI positive for which ever network is awarded it. It's a money making machine, including after they shell out for the top on air talent.
The fact that CBC bleeds cash has nothing to do with it's hockey coverage. As others have pointed out, the hockey coverage is likely one of a handful of shows that make money for that network. So your suggestion is the struggling network that is losing money, should not invest in the one product guaranteed to make a positive return on their investment? Hope you don't run your own business.

Replied to wrong message - sorry. But nice shot at me and my business acumen anyhow. You don't care about how the government spends your dough, that's your prerogative. Cbc isn't a private corporation and shouldn't act like it is one. Don't bitch about underfunding when you drop big dough on something the private guys could handle.

TSN not doing national games anymore? Man, that's a huge loss for them and huge gain for Sportsnet if they get it in return.
I would prefer all three hockey networks having deals though.

But he won't be calling the Canada games with Hughson also there. Hughson is the Bob Cole now of CBC now... I'm sure Mark Lee will get all the B-games. And it's not as if he's terrible...somewhat boring yes, but more than competent.

Why does Ottawa get a dedicated broadcast team when it is a population center of approx 1 million like Calgary/Edmonton are? What I would like is to scale back to either a Montreal/Toronto game on the early game and one western game. Ideally Toronto or Montreal but not both but that's not going to happen. It pisses me off that you get 3 broadcast teams covering 3 eastern teams but only 1 broadcasting team covering 4 western teams. Why does Ottawa get special treatment? Can't tell me Ottawa games help the bottom line for cbc.

Yeah it was nice having so many networks playing hockey...it just meant more games and more options for the fan of the game.
I'm sure the'll be a mad scramble for the door now at TSN. Who will defect first?

Wow is right. For all the huffing and puffing that TSN calling itself Canada's hockey leader etc etc over the years, and all the staff that theyve acquired strictly for hockey (Dreger, McKenzie, Cuthbert, Miller, the list goes on), to get outbid is absolutley huge.
Are those guys going to stick around there for WJHC? Cuthbert and Miller just going to call regional games or CFL games? CBC and Rogers have the next two Olympics as well, IIRC?
Does CBC get their theme back, for pennies on the dollar from TSN?
This is huge news.
