I had never seen that press conference clip. It is pretty remarkable. I like MacTavish. But he's trying to tell the press that hockey works on a 20 year cycle after a success. That's not an argument that would fly with most teams. They are paying the price for their failures, not their successes.

How many times does the Oilers have to fire the head coach?? Can't the owner Katz figure out that the problem is not because of coaching??? It is in the upper management KLowe and his buddies.

Epic post browna but I feel you glossed over the Comrie debacle which really was the beginning of the end of Lowe's reputation among players and agents in the league. Ever since then he hasn't been able to bring in anybig UFAs.

Took a lot of hubris to think he could just waltz in and fix the problem by coddling the kids.
I am a new school coach; no game day practice. Ta-da! Didn't work? I'll just bench the Russian kid, that will send a message! He's safe, press will miss quote him and I can hide behind that for a while.

You're right, but he did convince Pronger. And got that through false promises.
But yeah, holding a grudge against Comrie when his second contract came up, after performing well, wanting Comrie to actually take less because he felt Comrie owed him because the Oilers overpaid him out of junior as a free agent.
When Comrie refused, his name and his families name was dragged through the mud in the city. Then the trade demand and Lowe firing back with asking for money back, as if Lowe was standing up for some misguided principal.
Of course this also after the infamous Christmas day practice too.
Eakins and all the current staff should become permanent fixtures of the Oilers. The success rate is just perfect. Just win enough to bump themselves out of the top 3 picks towards the last month of the season.
Katz's team doesn't deserve the attention come draft time.

SHUSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! What are you guys doing in this thread? We don't wan't Katz to read any of this and come to his senses and fire Kevin Lowe. Go back and edit your posts to reflect support for the man.
I think Kevin Lowe works for the Flames. There is no way their ownership group can be that stupid in keeping him around this long, all the while never going anywhere and playing second fiddle to the other Alberta team. Lowe is a cancer and is getting a free pass. He's totally trolling that organization.
Hell, it seems like we're further along in our rebuild than they are. And we only started eight months ago.
I'm almost dead certain Lowe is on the Flames' payroll.

What false promises did he offer Pronger?
I think most of us would really enjoy a list of the crappy things they've/Lowe has done.
Let me try:
-Dragging Comrie through the mud, then asking for money back
-Christmas Day practice
-Calling out Souray for faking injury
-Trading known injured players back to back
-Announcing almost signed/traded players which made them look bad when it wasn't consummated
-Fired 4 coaches (including a popular Pat Quinn) in 5 years for not getting further despite a horrible record.
They cannot fire Eakins. They're stuck with him. Honestly I think it's going to take 30 or so games for the team to come around to playing the way he wants them to in any event. By that time the playoffs will be long gone, but games 40-82 are where we'll see the positive impact, if any, of Eakins on the team.
Next play for the Oilers is the shake up trade. Everyone knows it is coming, and as the team continues to play poorly, it only makes it more difficult for Edmonton to get something decent in return.

Can someone expand on this one? I've never heard of it.
