come on guys, don't feed the troll. Anyhow, I hope this is true, MacDonald is terrible and in a rebuild there is zero reason to have him on board.

I'm thinking Pitt. I believe their youngster back-up has not looked good in his 2 starts? I can't see them wanting to play Fleury every game until Vokoun comes back.

Edit: just looked it up and Jeff Zatkoff is his name. In 2 games he has a .818 sv% and a 5.04 GAA. I think its all but certain the penguins pick up Mac.

Again feel free to leave the talk about the poster out of the thread it doesn't belong here.

And I have not commented on Joey MacDonald's play at all in this thread other than to say he was wrong saying it was a lucky goal so why bring it up?

I think it is a fine move to waive him and makes sense. I have questioned why they had him on the team since he was re-signed so not sure what there is to admit about him being a bad goalie.

I don't have a problem with MacDonald's comments either - he wasn't wrong. There was a lot of standing around, a couple of bad defensive zone give-aways (again) and that line of Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Bertuzzi had the Flames running around in their own end all night. Not a recipe for success.

But in terms of a hockey decision, making a change at goaltender seems like a sensible thing to do at this point.

So far this year, the rest of the team has been much better than the goaltending.
All the more reason for him not to bail on the team. For him to say that the team let him down or whatever would be like after almost every other game, someone saying that he let them down...you don't do that. You win as a team and you lose as a team. Instead, it would have been a lot better if MacDonald says something along the lines of:

"I'm not the best goalie in the world and I make mistakes so I'm going to need help back here to cover my mistakes but I'll do my best to cover up the mistakes of others"

MacDonald is a tool, and not a good one. I've never liked him and I'll be a lot more happy when he's done. I will say again that I don't think any goalie is going to save this team at this point.

Zatkoff.. and yes, he's been pretty bad. 10 goals on 55 shots.

Good call. I say he ends up in PIT.

that 3rd goal was a killer. For a team that continues to get up after getting knocked down, you saw hesitation after the goal. After the 4th they seemed to stop skating for a bit.

The third goal was terrible. No way an NHL goalie should let in a goal like that. Cover the damn post! The fourth goal he was back in the net a bit much but no way the defense should have let Abdelkater walk right out front like that unmolested. The fourth goal is equal blame to the team and to Mac. I think waiving him is the right thing to do. If we are going with a rebuild lets see what the goalies in our system can do.

Thanks for your effort Mac. Your time with the Flames was agonizing to watch and hard on a guy's acid reflux. Proctor and Gamble hope your career continues somewhere else! After your comments about last night's game, I hope you're done. Not good form pushing your teammates under the bus after the two brutal goals in the third and then giving up two goals on five shots in the first. Look in the mirror before you make those comments. Just poor form.

Great news, absolutely no upside playing this guy, or even keeping him on the roster IMO. And to everyone saying he is a solid backup/career backup…no he really isn't. He's a third string goaltender that has made a couple of runs (unsuccessful) as a backup and played a bit as a #1 due to injury. Since turning 25 he has played way more AHL games then NHL games, hell in the last 3 years (from age 30-33) he has played way more in the AHL then the NHL. Sorry, but he's not close to being a "solid" or "career" backup goalie in the NHL, he is clearly AHL calibre and judging from his quote in the Herald, doesn't seem to realize it.

You're lucky to be collecting an NHL salary Joey, you should be nowhere near this league.

2 goals on 5 shots in the 1st and he says they can't let Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Bertuzzi pass the puck around.

He's right, they can't let the opposition pass. Because after just one pass, Joey Mac is 2 feet out of position everytime.

Joey MacDonald makes easy saves look like he is striving and at least half the goals he has let in this season were from 25' out and were unscreened/not-deflected.

Ramo's numbers don't look great, and he had a couple of bleh games, but all-in-all, the team looks a lot more confident when he is in net. The main thing for me though, is giving 2 young goalies some NHL experience. MacDonald made no sense on a rebuilding team. If they wanted a veteran to take the pressure off, a 3rd stringer that has been on waivers possibly more than any any other goalie currently in the NHL, was not the answer.

And what was this about him calling out the team last night? Where can I read the details?

In the context of re-building, that would probably be the best scenario until one of these guys can establish themselves as the number one, or until a move is made to bring someone else in.
I couldn't agree more. Despite the surprising start our Flames are still just one month in to this "rebuild." Let's find out what we have in our 4 young goalies before we burn a single asset to trade for a guy that will get us in to 9th place.

Quote:
But MacDonald, apparently, didn’t appreciate the handiwork of the fellows in front of him.

Given his gaffe, the critical tone came as a bit of a surprise.

“The first period, we did a lot of standing around and watching,” said MacDonald. “There wasn’t a whole lot going on. We were watching (Pavel) Datsyuk and (Henrik) Zetterberg and (Todd) Bertuzzi pass the puck around. You can do that with guys like that. Look what happens — they find back doors, they find seams. In the second period, we were a lot better.

“Then in the third, you know what? I didn’t think we had much. I know they got that lucky goal, but we’ve got to turn around and get some chances. I thought we just sat back and played the majority of play in our own end. You can’t do that.”

And you can’t let in a goal like Tomas Tatar’s — from behind the goal-line, from deep in the corner.

But in it went, squeezing past MacDonald’s pillows to give the travellers a 3-2 lead.

“A goalie makes a mistake and it goes in the net,” said MacDonald, who also permitted a sharp-angle conversion by Justin Abdelkader later in the game (which was followed by an extra-attack marker by Curtis Glencross). “Guys make lots of mistakes on the ice (but) once we make one, everybody knows. It’s one of those things — I’ve got to stop it. And 99 times out of 100, you stop them.”

Just read the article - I hadn't heard MacDonald's comments. What a turkey. Adios Joey.

As for being a bad teammate v "just answering the question honestly"... he may have been accurate and just speaking honestly, but it wasn't necessary and kind of a low blow to the rest of the team. Maybe he knew he was on the way out, may be this was part of the equation in waiving him, but he could have taken the high road and barked at his (former?) teammates behind closed doors.

Just imagine if Backlund had missed a check and said that in the post game presser. He'd be scratched till the Olympic break.

Mac should be the last player to call out teammates. He's so slow and gives juicy rebounds. Work on your game pal, then we'll talk. You are on waivers on a team with not good goaltending. Figure it out Bub!

He's going to pass through waivers, so I don't know what the Flames intend to do here.

Don't want him taking time away from Ortio/Berra/Brossoit in the AHL.
