I hope the edmontonian gets built.
I would love to see a beautiful building like this in Alberta.
Edmonton doesn't have as many latte sippers as they do yop gobblers, but maybe just enough to make this project successful.
I am curious how much an entry level condo in this building would cost
I hope it gets built just so that someone's ego gets bruised in Calgary and they demand an even taller building

I recently opened my own shop and until the end of July worked a block south of the EPCOR tower. There is a huge difference. It would have been like putting a new building on the wrong side of the Cecil in downtown Calgary 10 years ago. Until the area is developed, it's in a tough spot.
In any event, I briefly considered space in the EPCOR tower but decided to move outside of the downtown core for parking, construction, and other reasons. I signed a 3 year lease and may consider going back down once the construction dies down.

Yeah, that Edmonton proposal seems like one of those fantasy pie-in-the-sky proposals that float around for years (its already been around for 6) that you know have absolutely no basis in reality. Calgary has had a few of those over the last few decades and they are pretty easy to spot.
Edmonton needs to get some modestly-sized towers up before they can even think about something like this.
I saw the six years at an "Architects office in the design phase" and thought the same thing. Calgary had that 100-120 story tower that was kicking around for a while, actually it's probably still sitting on someones desk buried underneath real projects.
Good on Edmonton for thinking big, but no way this goes ahead as planned at this point in time.
Exactly. I've talked with people in the know and the consensus is this project is unlikely to ever get off the ground.
I was involved with the EPCOR project and the building will be filled first before any new tower is seriously considered.
By the way, Hartwig, from what I know, is a two person operation. From Sherwood Park. There is no way they won't be booted off the project at some point for a more experienced, local firm, if it ever gets off the ground to begin with. Just my opinion.
if anyone care, i have designed a 500 story tower that will have slides for people to get to ground level.....
lol, people taking the slide would be approaching the sound barrier by the time they got to the bottom. Probably close to bursting into flames too. I wanna see that.

For residential, that's probably true, as downtown condos are very much a snowball effect. For commercial, I feel it's less so... small buildings eat away at the demand that could alternatively support a larger one.
I don't think that's how gravity works. There's this thing called terminal velocity.
Ya...but I didn't think I really had to follow the laws of physics when discussing a 500 storey building with slides used for getting to the ground floor

They might take away demand, but they make more business sense. That's why we always (unfortunately) see Calgary with the twins...they spreads the risk around. Edmonton has had what, 1 or 2 office tower projects in the last 20 years? They need to prove they can develop and make a 30 story buildings work, before they pull out the big guns from Sherwood Park.
The sweet skyscrapers with lasers on the roof that I used to draw in elementary school have about as much chance of being built as this thing.

I'm not arguing that a big commercial project is likely to go ahead in Edmonton because Edmonton hasn't had much medium-sized projects. Lack of mid-sized construction is also an indicator of weak demand.
