For those of you who are new to hunting and have gotten the itch, i'd also recommend taking an outdoor education course. It's fun, and eye opening. Lots to do with basic compass work, shelter building, fire starting etc. Guns may be unfair for animals but nature can also be unfair to man!

I've actually shot several Ruffed Grouse with my .30-06.
When we're moose hunting, we've tried everything to easily hunt the grouse at the same time. Turns out shooting 'em in the head with the moose gun is actually the easiest.

I use my .30-06 for moose and would on Muskox as well, but it is almost too big for Caribou.

What's Ironic is down here people "size matters" guys say that a 270 is a must, but 308 or 30-06 are the best for the little deer down here.
Hell I hunt with a .223 and do just as good, and I haven't lost one yet.

If you do intend to hunt with it, that's a pretty big rifle to start off with. It has a big boom. I'd very much recommend picking up a .22 and learning to shoot first before you move on to Springfield. A rifle that age is bound to be heavy enough to reduce recoil to manageable levels but still, grab a .22 and shoot the hell out of it. Cheap to buy, cheap to feed.

Where in the hell is .22LR at? It's no where to be found here and those who do have it are buying it all to resell it at 2 or 3 times the amount.

It was kind of in short supply here for a while, but not anymore.
I just picked up a couple 500 round boxes for ~$25 each.

I'm sure US customs wouldn't like international ammo shipments....
It sucks something fierce not being able to get .22lr to plink without some jackass waiting at all the wal marts or any other outdoor shop at 6 am to get their limits and then trying to sell it for 4 times the cost. The ATF would love to hear about this.

Where does everyone get their ammo from? Online, or within the Calgary area.

Before I started reloading I always bought from TSE or CSC. Wholesale sports also had a good selection.

I have the .30-06, but have none of the other gear for hunting. I'm sure google would tell me all the gear I need to have to go hunting, but for the newbie who is just going with a buddy for the 1st time, what do I need to not be useless out there?

My don't leave the house list is:
Tag and ID
Rifle
Spare Ammo in a belt pouch
Knife
Saw
Binoculars
When I'm out on my own, I carry a small pack with rope, spare clothes (fleece jacket, mitts, extra hat, socks, neck warmer), a granola bar, fire starting kit, and a small foam pad for sitting on.
I got a modest 5x5 whitetail on opening day with my Dad and Brother, so my season is done. The deer is already butchered and off to be turned into sausage, loin roasts and packages of ground - about a full cooler worth of meat.

If you have never hunted before, you should really take the time to do some safety training. There are online options as well (even if you have taken the courses to legally own a firearm).

I'll be heading out this weekend in search for caribou, not enough snow to drive snowmobile yet but enough to get stuck on ATV. Going to be interesting but hoping I can find some nice fat females!!!

What calibres do you reload? I do 45acp, 9mm and 223 right now.
