I think it's a smart move. At a certain point in a rebuild, you to realize you have the right core, and it's time to commit to them. Tavares is that franchise player, and the NYI have a great complimentary set of young guys. It makes no sense to keep pumping younger players into the system. It's time to give Tavares et al. the vets to play with. Vanek is probably a couple of years older than ideal, but rarely does that perfect acquisition ever come along.

That is a solid trade for both teams. Refreshing to see a team like the Islanders, with a strong core of young players, recognize that they need to strike while the iron is hot.
If things play out the way the Isles hope it does, that first round pick is probably going to be right in the middle of the pack of a so-so draft.
People see that "1st round pick" pop up and jump to some kind of crazy over-evaluation. It's a lottery ticket that depends on so many factors to have any value.

well to be fair it's only been speculation ... just something that would make a lot of sense because
a) he played college hockey there
b) his wife is from there
c) he lives there in the offseason
d) two good friends and ex-teammates (Ballard and Pominville) play there
but that doesn't mean he'll want to sign there ... I have a hard time finding an interview with Vanek in the Austrian press where he doesn't stress the importance of winning a cup. Don't know if the Wild would necessarily be my destination of choice in that case.
Let Vanek play alongside Tavares for a few months and I could easily see him re-signing there.
I agree with the sentiment that it's not close between Vanek and Cammalleri ... I like Cammy, but for me, Vanek is on another level.

With this trade, the Flames now have the lowest cap payroll in the NHL.

This is where Feaster and Burke have to sell what Cammy brings. Yeah Vanek's overall package is better than Cammy, but the one thing Cammy has over pretty much anything you will find available at the deadline is a playoff resume. The guy is clutch when it matters. 16 goals and 29 points in his last 26 playoff games.

Vanek is a very good player, and as long as they re-sign him I think it's a good trade.
But
If they don't re-sign him, and if the Islanders don't make the playoffs, it could turn into a devastating failure for them.

Good trade for the Isles. They have many young prospects so even if Vanek doesn't re-sign, the loss of picks is not the end of the world for them. They really need some dmen and a goalie though to be a real force in the East.

I could see Moulson signing back with the Islanders in the Summer.

Crazy. Islanders are going to get a good boost up front. Vanek and Tavares are going to be scary. There PP just got better too.

I think this will work out for both teams. Sabres get another 1st for their rebuild and Tavares gets a high scoring winger on his line.

Islanders need to get him re-signed or they just got bent. Granted they have had players that went to the Island kicking and screaming and ended up loving it, so i don't see Vanek being a problem.
As for posters comparing Cammi to Vanek....... not even close.
|
Apparently Kessel couldn't wait to sign there...
You can't read too much into it. I'm not even sure Minnesota can afford Vanek anyways. It would be hard to juggle a 3rd 7.5+ contract long-term (I know Heatly is coming off, but they are having financial issues).

Neat stat.
I wonder how many times a team with the lowest payroll has won the cup, if ever?

Good deal for Buffalo, hands down. Although I respect Vanek, and like Moulson, Vanek has always been over-paid IMO. And for Buffalo to aquire good draft picks and a good player like Moulson is a big win (UFA or not)- he can be flipped if need be. Buffalo cleared cap space with an unhappy camper in Vanek, and further stocked the prospect shelves~ If Moulson works out, thats an extra added bonus.

Moulson has scored 45 PP goals vs Vanek's 41 since 09-10 in the NHL. Not sure the PP got better.

Buffalo will get a thumbs up by their fans for this. A roster replacement to Vanek, 1st and a 2nd. Isles may get the kick in the butt they need but trading those picks aren't as big of a deal as they would be compared to us. A steep, steep price paid by Snow but a daring one nonetheless.

The thumbs up from the fans will be at the draft when Buffalo selects 1st overall, or 2nd overall if they lose the lottery. This trade certainly helps in trying to secure #1 spot.

Vanek resigns in Buffalo and Moulson with Isles in the summer. Sabres bag the picks for free

Probably just me but I think Moulson is the worst 30 goal scorer in the league.
