I guess that would be Kevin Lowe's new recruiting process. Sign with us as a free agent and you'll be our next captain no question ask.

Is this after mailing them highlight reel DVDs of former Captains?

I guess we'll see. But other than what he brings to the team in terms of leadership, Ference is basically their #1 defenceman.

Who cares if hes the greatest captain since Messier if they never make the playoffs?

Believe it was Harry Young who captained those two Spitfires teams...not sure who the alternate captains were, though.

Jason smith in Philly, and chara in Boston are 2 that come to mind to me.

He doesn't need to play a game...........he's been part of the organization for a little while already, been part of training camp and interacted enough with the coaches and players that they already know what kind of character and leadership he has. They probably already had a pretty good idea of that when they signed him, over the summer it's just been confirmed.

Great choice. It will suck seeing him wear that jersey, but it was the right choice.

I would rather have Ference as captain than Hall at this point.

If he's captain, it's because everyone who matters on that team looks at him as captain.

Still think the Flames should of got him back. Grit, leadership and experience- exactly what we could of used in our defence right now. We have one in GIO, but that's it. No surprise he was named captain at all.

Have the Oilers switched over to all environmentally responsible products and practices as part of the new leadership regime? If not, the players can expect to see some enlightening pamphlets in their stalls this year courtesy of the new captain.

good guy, alright player, wouldn't be my choice...

I guess he is a "winner" but so it George Parros

I would have picked someone that had actually played a game for the team

I am a big fan of Ference, but making him captain just screams of total failure for the organization

There is a lot of things that scream failure for that organization. A lot. This is not one of them.

Maybe not a scream, but a whisper I would say. Can't imagine seeing Ferance as a captain on too many other NHL teams.
