Most herp experts are pretty sure the snake did not kill these kids. Here is a statement from the Federation Of British Herpatologists on FB.

Has another reason been presented?

I actually thought the same thing the first time I heard this story.

Don't want to go into the speculation, but it isn't a stretch.

Exactly, they should be more familiar with crustaceans, such as crabs

I don't know anything about snakes, but if it fell through a ceiling and landed on the floor, I would imagine it would be pretty irritated.

Nobody else in the apartment heard a 45kg snake fall through the ceiling in the middle of the night? And it strangled them both at the same time, silently? It seems like there might be more to the story, imo.

Either way, add this to the already huge list of things that I don't need to worry about happening to my kid, but still worry about anyways. Number 5076: Silent escaped python attack in the night.

Jesus.

Very sad story and my condolences to the mother of the deceased boys.

Hard to imagine this was really what happened. If the two boys were sleeping in the same room, how can the second boy didn't hear any sound. The building didn't seem that well constucted so sound proofing can't be too good.

If it fell through the ceiling, I wonder if it fell onto the kids, crushing them with its weight, rather than constricting them to death?

Dropping 100 lbs. from 8 feet up onto two children who each likely weighs less than half of that would probably be enough to make it impossible for the kids to breathe or yell for help or anything.

Not that I am convinced the snake was even the guilty party in this case. The sad thing is that the damage has already been done to this animals reputation no matter what the outcome is.

I know I personally was about to buy a cuddly snake until I heard this story. Now I'm going to buy a wolverine instead.

Yup, that's the sad thing in this story. Won't someone think of the snakes?!

Way to take what I said out of context , I already posted earlier that the real tragedy was the death of the kids.

The uncle was on television, making a statement. He said the boys had spent most of the day out on a farm, touching and goofing around with dogs, cats, sheep and other animals.

After the uncle's statement, an official with the Columbus Ohio Zoo was on and said if the boys hadn't washed following their visit to the farm, a snake with hyper sensitive smell would have noticed, regarded them as prey and went looking for them.

Also possible, I suppose, that the snake fell out of the ceiling right on top of the boys, freaking everyone out, with the snake reacting naturally and wrapping itself around them in a hurry.

All theory.

What, the reputation that it is a cold blooded carnivore, that can swallow a child whole in the right circumstances?

The snake just went about his snakey business, and snaked a couple kids to death.
