Rocky: During this fight, I've seen a lot of changing, in the way you feel about me, and in the way I feel about you. In here, there were two guys killing each other, but I guess that's better than twenty million. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!
Rocky: [loud applause, even by the politburo]

Brian Lawton just tweeted that Kovalchuk retires, NJ terminates the contract, then he is free to play in the KHL. Or he could play with another team in the NHL. According to him.
Doesn't make much sense to me though. Otherwise why wouldn't Luongo just retire?

He'll probably not play anywhere in the fall, but I would wager a large amount of money he's going to be playing in Sochi and then for the KHL afterwards. There's an extremely low probability this guy's going to move back to Russia and fade into sunset never to be heard from again.

I know I mixed up a couple dates today, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't say April 1st on my calendar.

Yeah that's definitely not an accurate reading of how this works

I dont understand that though, wouldnt that make this terrible timing? He'll have no in-game experience. It would make more sense to for him to play this season and then pull this crap next year.
I am still shocked by this. After the whole ordeal of getting him, paying him, being punished he only plays for the Devils for what? 2.5 seasons?

Yah, that doesn't make sense at all. If that's the case, what's to prevent players who think they're underpaid, to retire, and then re-sign with another NHL team for higher contract dollars?

LOL@ all of those people in the Nichushkin discussions that tried to deny the existence of the "Russian Factor". Some argued it is only a worry with fringe NHLers. Nope! Kovalchuk and Radulov (and others) have proven that a weak argument.

It makes sense that if he retires his contract is terminated in the international sense.. but it doesn't work out that he would just be able to re-sign with NJ for a cheaper deal, or elsewhere in the NHL.
Essentially, ok you retired, your contract is no longer recognized by the NHL as long as you are inactive in the NHL. So he can go to Russia, sign and play there, but if he ever tries to come back to the NHL that ugly monster contract is waiting for him.
Just a guess..

Pretty sure you can't unretire for a set period of time. At least a year.

That sounds about right, but screw that! Sign me up for that 'ugly monster contract!'
I cant even play hockey but for $70M over the next 10 years I'll figure it out!

Remember when there were rumors of Kovalchuk house shopping in Calgary? So glad those were totally false, or at least didn't come to fruition.

I don't think retiring terminates a contract in the sense of who holds a players rights. Otherwise a guy like Hall could have simply retired after being drafted by the Oilers and become a free agent. If the Devils still hold his rights he wouldn't be eligible for the KHL, at least technically.
