Gagner certainly expediting his way out of Edmonton with that demand, if even at the end of the year.
Lowe must be fuming, only entertaining question is, does he leak any of that rage publicly?

Kind of crazy that Hudler @ $4 went from looking like an overpay to normal contract for an average producing munchkin in about a season.

Fortunately for the Oilers, UFA contracts can't be used as comparables in salary arbitration cases.

Pretty amazing that after picking 1st three years in a row (and picking all forwards), the Oilers still don't have a second top 6 centre.
I think they really would have loved Monahan.

It's true, the management doesn't have faith in Gagner and most fans echo those sentiments. If they truly believed he was a long term fixture on this team, there wouldn't be an arbitration hearing in the first place, nor would there have been MacT publicly addressing the media that Monahan was the guy who they wanted at #7. Despite putting up the point totals, Gagner is an extremely flawed player. Nurse will be alright, but it sucks they missed out on Monahan or Lindholm, should've tanked.

Not sure why? Gagner asking too much $5.5mil- Oilers predictably low balling him at $3.5mil; ultimately they will meet in the middle on a realistic deal @ $4.5-4.75mil. This is standard contract negotiations. If there ends up being too much bad blood over the whole negotiaton, (which would be ridiculous since Gagner's camp are the ones who filed for it), then Gagner plays his arse off & asks for a trade. That would bode well for the Oilers anyway since he would put up points in a career year, helping the team & garnering higher trade value.

Not really. The Arb deal will only be one season and then Gagner is a UFA. So the Oilers will get crap value out of trading him if it comes to that.

Possibly but I thought one of the few leverage points a team has over a player of Gagners status in arbitration is they can choose one or two years on the final contract awarded? If that is the case then team would obviously be wise to choose the 2 year term to avoid the option of prospective teams from simply waiting them out until the end of the first season.
The other thing is knowing Gagner is expecting $5+mil his potential target market is not going to be very big; that's a lot of money for a sub 6' center with a lackluster FO%

An Arb deal can't go into UFA seasons I am told so only a one year deal is possible. Oilers would have to dump him for less then full munchkin value.

I am not sure why people are surprised by Gagner asking fro 5.5 in arbitration. In the NHL the arbitrator chooses an award between the 2 asking prices, so players will always as high and teams will ask low. It's the nature of the beast.

I guess it can go into UFA! About $250,000 per more than I predicted but not too bad imo.

They signed before it went to arbitration. Check the "Gagner Signs" thread.

And the list is down to 7(?) out of the original 21.
That is a lot of good work by those GMs to get contracts worked out prior to the start of hearings today.
