I'm already hearing it from my friends: "You guys are gonna be the new oilers" "Last place in the league, no doubt" "Probably the worse goaltending situation in the league" "You guys are like the habs of the west, really short forwards"
Thing is, I can't disagree with them.
I can hope for breakout season from one of the young kids, and maybe a 1st overall pick but other than that it's going to be a rough season

That one you should be able to. Cammalleri, Stempniak and Baertschi, who else is under 6 feet? And 2 of those guys many fans expect are being shopped.
That's a far cry away from the Canadiens with Briere, Gionta, Desharnais, Gallagher and Plekanec. Not to mention the Flames have drafted in the first round a 6'3'' center, a 6'2'' center and a 6'1'' winger in the last 2 drafts.

We have a looooooooooooooooong way to slide before we can be compared to the stupid Oilers. We're already a bigger team and 3 first overall picks away from their incompetence. Also the Flames went through a firesale, Oilers just naturally sucked ass while trying to be competitive. It's going to be a rough couple years but I doubt the Flames could ever sink as far as that even if they tried.

Who knows, every year there is one team that everybody thinks will suck ass that ends up doing really well. Look at the Habs last year for example.

Those are all pretty iffy minuses. I am not even a fan of giving Billins an NHL deal or giving up a 5th for Russel... but they're marginal moves.
Feaster's been good recently.

Feaster is clearing buying into the rebuild, it's a big plus no matter which way you look at it. Can't really judge the additions either until you see them play so I agree that most of those minuses are borderline. Ramo was shocking to me though.

I think the most important thing Feaster has done is to get ownership on board with the rebuild.
I don't think Feaster needed much convincing for himself to get on board.

Whether Billins was signed to an NHL contract or not, he's a good, if not very good AHL player. If and when injury happen, you have to have AHL players on NHL contracts so they can be called up.
Trust me, Billins is going to be awesome for the Heat. Great signing by Feaster to address the farm.
Also, there's absolutely nothing wrong with Ramo's contract whatsoever.

We are no Boston Bruins but we have some good skilled vets, great d core, great goalie and Tip.
Not worried about it.
The Flames roster is what it is... A rebuild squad with a mediocre coach that will get mediocre results from a group of highly inexperienced players.
I don't mean to troll, but does anyone reasonably expect a playoff appearance this season in Calgary with this lineup and coaching staff?
Tell me to take a hike, and I will.. Don't mean to ruffle feathers I just haven't followed the flames roster until I read this thread.

The only way this roster comes close to the playoffs is with a vezina caliber 70+ games from Kipper. And that is highly unlikely to happen.

A Vezina caliber season from any of our goaltenders would go a long way actually. Again, unlikely to happen.
I am more than enough satisfied if we finish bottom 5 since this is a rebuild and the expectations are low but a good season and somehow sneaking in the playoffs would be a pleasant surprise.

Fire:
I would think they put Galiardi at C before they put Cammalleri there
Cammalleri - Stajan - Hudler
Baertschi - Backlund - Stempniak
Glencross - Galiardi - Jones
Bouma - Knight/Reinhart - Jackman
Horak, McGrattan
(until the deadline)
Jones and Stempniak are interchangeable on that lineup
And they finish 28-30

I just don't see the Phoenix Skaters being ahead of the Calgary skaters at all, I think the thing most people are missing when they talk about how bad the Flames will be, is there is actually really good depth here. We are just lacking top end talent, much like the Coyotes
Cammaleri-Stajan-Stempniak
Beartschi-Backlund-DJones
Glencross-Monahan-Hudler
Galidari-Horak-Jackman
Bouma-Reinhart-McGrattan
Giordano-Wideman
Brodie-O'Brien
Butler-Russel
Breen
Korpakoski-Vermette-Doan
Boedker-Ribeiro-Vrbata
Bissonette-Hanzel-Moss
??????-Klinkhammer-????????
OEL-Mchalek
Yandle-Schlemko
Klesla-Morris
Stone
Some really good D men, but Gio, Wideman & Brodie are really good Dmen too.

While I get that, I really believe the shortened season had a lot to do with the random and otherwise mediocre teams making it into the lower seeds. That being said, with 82 games next year and this squad night in night out, I really doubt a miracle is going to happen

I don't think Ramo's contract is a big deal at all. We aren't going to be a cap team this year or next year likely. If he sucks we can dump him in 2 years and if he's good we have a starter and can sign him to an appropriate contract. It's really a non-issue.

I agree that there does not look like a lot of room for the youngsters. I do however think Sven is on the team. One of Knight or Bouma will not have a spot, with either Cammi or Galiardi moving to center so Sven is up.
I know a lot of posters think that we are going to have a bunch of prospects in the lineup to start the season but more than likely it will not be that way. I don't see a team taking on Cammi at $6 million for just a pick. Not sure if they would trade Stempniak in the summer for a 3rd/4th when they can get a 2nd for him at the deadline?
Also as much as Feaster might like to say there is a competition, 99% of the time a one way contract beats out a 2 way contract. Once camp starts trades are near impossible to make even if a 2way beats out a one way contract. I remember a couple of sesaons ago when Byron was called up and played like a spark plug. When he was sent down Feaster said he would do everything he could to get him back up as soon as possible. I don't think we saw Byron for the next 3 months. Thats because trades are hard to do before February.
