Feaster tried to get Ference. Ference went to the enemy. Quickly scramble for plan B. At least that's how I see it.

Only make sense if the Flames get rid of Butler.

As to why they didn't pick him up on waivers:
They were after other options... those didn't pan out, went back to St. Louis

Russell is not very good. He's mediocre defensively, and honestly, his offensive game is not very good either.

Butler never really goes away.

I like this move for Calgary.
Ship him off at the deadline for picks. Some team will always be looking for depth on the backend at the deadline.
This is the right direction. Stay away from deals longer than 3 years.

Reclamation project.
He's still young and has good physical tools. If he can pull his game together he's worth more then a 5th round draft pick.
If not, no big deal.

Cundari

That's a lot of a certain type of Dman... Russell appears to be an upgrade on Butler, however. Higher ceiling. He WAS a highly touted prospect in Columbus.
I hope we're actively shopping LWers and LH D-men.

Disagree with that... they play an entirely different style.
Nobody can call Butler a "puck-moving" dman. He's a positional defensive dman. (aka why he's the whipping boy a lot, doesn't hit much, doesn't score, doesn't set up goals, he's just... there)
Russell has a very similar playstyle to Giordano (puck moving). Which is a lot of hot & cold... hence the mixed reactions.
End of the day, this is a 1yr deal during a rebuild. Doesn't mean much.

So 29 teams didn't want him for free a few days ago but the Flames decided to TRADE for him?

If you pick a guy off waivers can you put him in the minors or does he have to stay on your roster. If so with this guy being a 5-9 defensemen it makes sense to give up the pick

This is an upgrade compared to Sarich, Babchuk, and Butler....and he is half the price.

You can send him to the minors, but when you put the player on waivers, the team you claimed him from get's first dibs.

Not sure if cundari fits that grouping, he seems to be a unique product in the flames system, tough to play against, works his tail off with offensive upside, most of the other guys play positional more than physical
