That autopark (not Sky) needs about 40 more stories.

That is phase 2 of the project, but trust me you don't want to see it. They just plop a big box down on top and call it a day. I'm much rather they keep this funky retro look of phase 1 through the whole thing.

I suspect phase 2 is not really designed, just an idea of the scale of what could be done.
I too like what they did with the phase 1 parkade.

This picture is stunning.

That's going to ruin the view for the bow. The bow was designed to have office and lobby views looking southwest. That's too bad.
Downtown's getting a bit crowded. They need to start spreading out a bit.

This is an image from the Sky Garden at the Bow, looking out.
If anything I'm more jealous now that they'll get another thing to look at from up there.

I just heard the other day from an employee at Telus that they were scrapping this tower for now and were just going to use the old building or something. I guess not...

Not really....the building is on an adjacent block and on the other side of that block....that's plenty of room to see other things. Downtown views are never a permanent thing, but at the very least, the best looking tower in Calgary will have a great view of the second best looking tower (you decided which is which).

No they don't. Densifying downtown even more is exactly what it needs. There are still way too many open lots and holes everywhere, and it's already too big to really walk around in. The denser it gets, the more life it gets too as people can start sharing amenities.

That particular part of downtown is hogging all the density (or at least all the height) though. West End needs some love too!

The west end does need some height.

They are going to shift people into a renovated Len Werry but that is due to them slowly vacating TELUS House on 1st. Some employees will probably stay at the Len long term but I can't imagine upper management staying there or the 3030 building in Franklin; these buildings don't project the right image.

Every time I see this sentiment expressed on Twitter or the Calgary Sun comments, I genuinely wish that technology had reached the point where the /slap command had a physical outcome.

In regards to lower buildings on the west end, I remember hearing once (can't recall when or where, of course) that the reason our downtown seems to rise from there on out has to do with height restrictions concerning the shadows cast over the bow river, and that creating taller buildings/more shadows would screw with the ecosystem.
Is that true, or is it complete bull?

It is true that there's height restrictions, however there could still be some taller buildings in the west end, further back from the river. The taller buildings in the east are also close-ish to the river.

Valid concern and valid question, no matter how much the cheerleaders might hate it. Telus is a public phone/internet utility company; not a builder, not a developer, not a REIT. Why are they going into the risky real estate business starting off with such a complex mixed-use venture? The only credible explanation - they've made too much money of our bills.
As for the building design - I don't like it either. Pretencious and disharmonious.

Would you say the design is.... shallow and pedantic?
