I don't blame the cops at all but question why they chose to use their guns rather than going with pepper spray, billy club or a tazer. Honestly I think all three of these defences would have quickly stopped the dogs advances and possibly not killed it?

Possibly but they only had seconds to react if I was in their shoes I would have made sure i put the dog down rather than hope knocking it on the head would calm it and not make it more aggressive

Tazer? Might have worked. But key word was might. It was too close, and animals are too unpredictable. If it doesn't work, or sends the dog in a frenzy even the master is in trouble (and the police are really in trouble). Here's a tazer attack on a rottweiler...not really fazed.

Pepper spray? About the same issue as tazer except even less effective.
Billy club? Did you miss the part where it was a rottweiler? Jeeze. I guess if you didn't care too much for having function of your arm that's a decent idea.

Dogs can scare easily and if you shoot beside it then it'll probably run. No need to shoot it 5 times.

Dog was black and brown - double whammy.
(sorry)
I find zero fault with the actions of the police officer. As is true in most cases, the dog pays the price for the stupidity of the owner.

What a grade-A dip****, too bad the cops didn't shoot him in the knee and the dog found a good home with someone that doesn't think the world revolves around them.

Won't stop a dog like that, assuming they could even deploy all those things successfully.

Cops shoot to neutralize the threat. So if they're shooting, it's not just going to be once and then wait around to see if this dog has made up its mind about inflicting wounds on you or not.

Yeah great and the bullet bounces off of the concrete and kills a bystander.
Cops aren't trained to fire warning shots, or wounding shots. they are trained to aim center mass of the target and put it down.

It was a 110 pound Rotti, there's no guarantee that the taser would take it down it could have sent it into a frenzy.
Dogs don't react to pepper spray like people do, they don't stop and try to clear their eyes, they basically go nuts and attack any thing that it can sense.
A billy club? Simply put give me a break.

Either way, it's the dog owner's fault. Such a shame when people are bad dog owners.

They should also wait until criminals shoot them, stab them or bludgeon them before reacting just you know to be sure.

That comment would be funny if something like it hadn't been suggested.
Let the dog bite him, indeed.
Police are trained that public safety is utmost. If they are injured/ incapacitated, they are doing their job in a diminished capacity, and public safety is therefore at risk.
To suggest the officer allow the dog to bite him before taking action is such a baffling idea I'm not sure i want to even try to wrap my head around it.

I love dogs, of all breeds. Some breeds can seriously injure a person. Are you trying to say that the lethality of that particular dog was minimized because there was a rope dragging behind it?
I hate the fact the dog died, but I cannot blame the officer. I feel worse for the cop that had to kill it than I do for the owner of the dog. The owner should be feeling terrible for making someone shoot his dog. What a pathetic loser.
