Does sound like a good story. It is still fun to watch the development or lack thereof depending on how things turn out but still interesting.
Maybe there is a shot here for him.

If he turns out great. I have zero expectations with this pick i'm sure his development will reported back to fans if he accomplishes anything, so high upside I guess.
JMO I think he would have been left undrafted.
Nice size for a Center. At least it wasn't gambling a low draft pick I suppose but why wasn't a 7th used here????

I was hoping we would draft Bill Bumface. He dropped all the way from the 22 ranked skater. But this guy is fine.
The nice thing about this is you dont have to sign him for four years so you have an extra year to watch him develop before using a contract spot.

He is a RW, not a center - unless you got some differing info that I haven't seen.
Why spend a 5th over a 7th? Well, there are some possible explanations. Perhaps the Flames' scout noticed other scouts looking at him. Also, as mentioned previously somewhere else, it was this scout's 'spot' to pick - perhaps as the 'thank you' for spotting Jankowski as per speculation. Also, a player selected from the 4th round through the 7th round seem to have the same success rates - 11 percent according to this study:

While the authors confirmed the obvious, that players taken in the first round have the best chance of a meaningful NHL career (65 per cent of them by the authors’ count), they also discovered that players taken in the fourth through seventh rounds all have the same rate of success (roughly 11 per cent)

Pretty interesting article that says Detroit is actually a team that drafts badly, but that the "European scouts outperform the North American scouts".
Seems to me that a good drafting team will be trying to scout guys thoroughly in these latter rounds while keeping an eye out for other scouts who are potentially scouting the same player.
This Flames scout was very passionate about this guy, so I don't mind it at all.

I would also imagine that at some point during the draft there are no more guys left that everybody or even most at the table have an opinion on. At that point, discussions can easily become rather pointless, and at the end there's only 3 minutes between picks.
So rather than have an uninformed consensus made tired and possibly in a bit of a hurry, hand out spots and let guys pick the players they feel good about picking.
I don't know how common this is, but it sounds very typically Feaster; let your staff make the calls they should be able to make.

Because he's going the NCAA route if he had gone undrafted the next opportunity to sign him is as a free-agent when his college career is done. At that point you're competing with 29 other teams to sign him (assuming he's worth signing at that point.) This way he's officially a Flame's asset.

As someone mentioned, the stats show that the 3rd and 4th rounds are functionally equivalent, as are the 5th 6th and 7th rounds.
So if you like a guy, you pick him. Trying to wait a round is pointless. Scout the guys, make a list, and take the players you like.
Some fans are WAY over-valuing and over analyzing what rounds players are being taken in and where the Flames should have waited a round or whatever to pick a guy.
Also, you are only looking at one team and comparing it to consensus. I am sure that if you picked any other team and compared them to consensus, you would find the exact same things.

What happened was that Harrison scored 22 goals and added 21 assists in 28 games with Dexter, a Div. 1 prep program that plays an independent schedule. Anyone would be impressed by that level of production, but the Flames liked a little more than that.
“Obviously, I’m a big guy,” Harrison said, “but surprisingly, I’ve got some legs: They like the way I skate.
“As a big guy, that can be very helpful. I can get into corners, hit guys, use my body to my advantage ... I’ve got some speed, and they were very attracted to that.”

Looks like a baby feasted. Maybe that's why they drafted him?

Apparently the stats I posted earlier in this thread were from a previous season... this last season he scored 24goals and 27 assists in 28 games
