Yeap, and lets also not forget that the Flyers are very unlikely to go into next season with all of Timmonen, Meszaros, Coburn, Grossman, Streit and Schenn making a combined $28+ million.
They will very likely clear more cap space by moving a Dman.

This is what happens when a goalie gets over rated by playing for a stingy defensive team.
Mike Smith come on down! You're the next average goalie going to get over paid!

The Flames don't need anymore goalies. IF they get to the point where the rest of the team is good but they still don't have a solid goaltender, then look at bringing in a big gun (and even then it wouldn't be Bryzgalov).
|
Although I agree with you and want to see how the Ramo/Berra experiment turns out, I can't really fault others who would like a more established goalie. A short term (3 years or less) and decent cap hit (4 million or less) would be an acceptable insurance policy, especially with all the cap space we currently have. But I'm sure Bryz will still command larger $$$ and term.

True enough. Doesn't Pronger's LTIR buffer need to be spent on a Dmen or am am remembering something completely different?

Nope, this is what happens when an owner takes a special shine to a player.
There were more than enough red flags regarding Bryzgalov to know he was a product of his system.
2011 playoffs, Coyotes are down 3-0 in the series.
Bryzgalov arrives, some say late, to the game for game day skate/warmup with his bags packed and plane ticket bought to return to Russia that night, following the game.
Snider must be mortified.

I think if there is an odd man out, it is Meszaros.. Coburn isn't quite as gifted offensively, but he has put up similar numbers. Roughly the same age, I think he makes Meszaros expendable.. especially since Streit will pick up any offensive slack.
4 mill cap hit on an expiring contract shouldn't be too hard for the Flyers to move granted he is healthy.
The other option is Grossman... him and Schenn play a pretty similar game, I noticed Grossman a lot more than Schenn in the games I saw though.. very similar contract numbers and term, with Schenn being younger and possibly having the higher upside. Also they paid the JVR price to acquire Schenn so I can't see him going anywhere soon.
If clearing Meszaros contract would gives them roughly $13 mill in cap space.. the question is do they even NEED To clear that contract?

I think he's definatley KHL bound. He's damaged goods in the NHL and unless he wants to play backup or 1b ala Vokun he's gone. If Bob doesn't take that money bryzgalov will.

Wow that team seemed to take a wrong turn after getting rid of Carter and Richards.

The Flyers are a funny bunch. Personnel-wise, they want to be in the news all the time. Interested in everybody, pursuing everybody, making sure their name is in every trade rumour, trading for everybody, buying out everybody, etc.
Attention whores, they are.

Pretty good paycheck for 2 years work though. Bryzgalov will end up taking home almost $40M from his short stint in Philadelphia.

Yikes!
Gino Reda@GinoRedaTSN8s
Just did the math. At the end of it all, the Flyers will have paid Bryzgalov 36.8 mil for 52 wins. That's aprox $708,000/victory. #TSN

Outside of MacDonald you've listed a bunch of unproven goalies. And the only thing MacDonald has proven is he isn't a starter. I understand it's a rebuild and will take some time but I don't understand why stability in net is a bad thing. If you can get a starter (and I'm not saying that's Bryzgalov), why not take it? Takes a lot of pressure off of the young unproven goalies and more importantly the rest of the team. Otherwise the trial by fire that's going to take place is more reminiscent of our neighbours up north than any other team.
And we've already had the argument about having a full cupboard of goalies before when Irving and Keetley were fighting for goalie of the future status with McElhinney, Lalande, and Krahn in the system as well!

RT @tpanotchCSN: Holmgren called Bryz signing the "most costly mistake we've made" ... stands behind him saying his antics were "blown out of proportion..."

So I'm guessing Philly will be pushing hard to get Miller or Luongo with the obvious preference going to Miller?
I think in the grand scheme of things, it'll take a bit more to get Miller, but in the end, any contract Philly signs Miller to will be a fraction of Luongo's.

Tim Panaccio @tpanotchCSN
Holmgren said several times this was a "business decision" and impacted on getting Claude Giroux signed next. Does not see Luongo as option

MacDonald has played 122 NHL games.
Ramo has played 48 NHL games and 211 KHL games.
Berra has played 245 games in the top Swiss league.
None of them are young either. At the start of next season they will be 33, 27, and 26 respectively.
While I understand the need for good goaltending, I think the best course is to see if we already have it before we go looking for it.

Exactly. Especially considering that we don't exactly have an abundance of redundant assets to trade at this point.
See what we've got while we continue to stock-pile assets.
