And Calgary has now declared a state of local emergency.
Quote:
STATE OF LOCAL EMERGENCY DECLARED
Pursuant to Section 21 of the Emergency Management Act (R.S.A. 2000 Ch. D-13) and Section 4 of The City of Calgary Bylaw 25M2002, a State of Local Emergency (SOLE) has been declared in The City of Calgary effective 1016h, June 20, 2013.
The decision was made by Deputy Mayor Richard Pootmans and Ald. John Mar to declare a SOLE based on the potential severity of the incoming high river flows in conjunction with expected heavy rainfall.
The City of Calgary has begun to implement its flood response plans with the deployment of sandbags and temporary dams at key locations to protect property and infrastructure. The City is working to ensure the safety of Calgarians and asks for their patience and cooperation during this time.
Citizens are reminded to:
Stay away from rivers and creeks as the water is rising and moving quickly, and banks may be unstable.
Avoid storm water ponds and storm drains, and do not let children play near them.
Do not drive through flooded areas such as underpasses.
If you experience basement seepage or overland flooding, call 3-1-1 to report.
If you or someone else is in imminent danger, call 9-1-1. Remember that 9-1-1 is for emergencies only; please use 3-1-1 for reporting non-emergency issues.
Monitor local media and City of Calgary messages. For more information on flooding, visit calgary.ca/flooding.
The City continues to monitor flows and precipitation and will take appropriate action as required. Updates will be provided throughout the day.

Anyone know if there is a phone number in High River to call for Flood Evacuation? Apparently my father in-law is stuck in his house which is about to flood and he can't get out.
Edit: The High River website is down

Try this one: 403.652.6960. It was from a news article and it read: For emergent issues please call the Disaster Emergency Number at 403.652.6960
If you think it is very serious (being stuck in a flooding house sounds potentially life threatening to me) just call the RCMP: http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/ab/det-eng.htm

Not sure if it should go here, but a sour gas pipeline erupted in Turner Valley.
Not good.

All the water coming from upstream will make our rivers very high later on.

My friend barely made it out of her house on the 'higher side' of High River with her two kids about an hour ago... one kid is < 3 months old. She had about 20 minutes to pack them up and leave before waters were up to her shins in her driveway and coming up through her basement drain & drains in the bathroom. So scary and sad.

Not being an expert outdoorsman, how long can we expect the rivers to be a dangerous place after something like this? Is rafting on Saturday out of the question? That is if I can even get to Kimberley...

It all flows down hill, a lot of Saskatchewan flooding starts in the Rockies..
Especially once these rivers meet up, right now the Bow isn't too bad, just the camp sites around it, but if that starts picking up then it will flow right into and through Calgary.
They built that city on a horrible, horrible flood plain and have learned from past mistakes.

From my office, the waters on the Bow look only slightly higher than they do at this time of the year. However, I'm sure all the pedestrian underpasses are flooded out at this point.

Just received a text from my sister saying the Elbow river has flooded part of Bragg Creek. Highways out of Bragg Creek are flooded as well.

Holy shinguard that is some big time damage to Hwy 1. I wonder how long it will be closed for, they must be worried about the stability of the bridges themselves at this point.

Apparently we have about 60 MM registered from snowmelt in the past 24 hours as well, rain on snow events are brutal.
Add that to the mix of what hasn't been recorded..

Can be pretty scary stuff, but without knowing what %H2S that line is, its hard to say (but the ERP says life threatening!!) It is heavier than air, so dont go in to the basement. If they smell sour eggs get to fresh air (sour eggs is low % H2S).
Mandatory evac for a couple neighborhoods as well... http://www2.macleans.ca/2013/06/20/s...turner-valley/

It really is dependant, but a lot of times, it is truly safer to stay inside your home, than be evacuated.
