So what's our roster depth like now?
Stajan
Backlund
Knight
Horak?
And after the draft/offseason my hope is:
MacKinnon/Stajan
Backlund/Monahan
Knight
Horak
Exciting times.

You missed Reinhart and I am pretty sure we have Blair Jones under contract still as well.
Someone will either need to be traded, sent down or converted to the wing.

Why would nobody else go after him?

What exactly are people expecting to get with that 4th rounder? Do you play hard ball with FLA on this and pinch them to take a 5th - is that honestly worth it?.
|
Don't for get this, his 623 faceoff wins last season led the nation and is 2nd best in UND single-season history.

I guess I would say to things to that thinking
1) If you can avoid other teams whispering in his ear, that is a good thing. Even if Calgary was preferred, you never know once people get talking.
2) Its probably more of a relationship game. Be nice to FLA when maybe you don't have to in hopes of keeping in good terms. A 4th is a small price to pay for good relations. Might be helpful when acquiring #2

It is also an overpayment if he decides to continue holding out (the Flames had 10 days to talk to him before the trade so that shouldn't happen).
|
well, I think there is an assumption that Calgary has been able to talk to him or his agent and that we'll be able to sign him...
Waiting until August may have resulted in a) Calgary offering a lot more on the UFA market or b) Another team snatching him up.
So, it is only an overpayment if Calgary cannot sign him...hopefully, that is not the case or it looks really bad on the organization for not doing some due diligence.

I am happy with that trade, especially if he signs.
edit: Not an overpayment as apparently they have agreed to a contract already..

"Corban Knight is a player our scouts have been watching closely throughout his collegiate career," said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. "When Florida did not sign Corban this spring we contacted them and asked for permission to speak with him. Florida granted teams, including ours, that opportunity on the condition that we were prepared to trade for his rights. During the past ten days we spoke with Corban and his agent, and were pleased to learn Corban wanted to start his pro career in Calgary. We were able to consummate the trade today with Florida, and are confident we will get Corban signed when permitted in July. We are thrilled to add him to our organization, and look forward to his debut in a Flames’ sweater this Fall."
I liked reading the part I bolded.

Also now they know what they have and can plan and make moves accordingly vs leaving a question mark until mid August

Wasn't Bouma playing center as well before his injury?
Backlund
Stajan
Horak
Reinhart
Jones
Bouma
Knight
Definitely a bit of a log jam, but a good log jam to have.. I like 6/7 of those players. All of them are hard working, but none are #1 centers.. Flames are getting there though. Definitely a great move in the right direction.

Couture cannot sign an extension to his contract until he starts the final year of his current contract. That is why he has to wait until July.
Knight has no such constraints as far as I know. His college year is all wrapped up and he should be able to sign at any moment.

That's awesome. I have full confidence we will get the little alter boy signed then. Great trade regardless. 4th rounder is an important pick but who are we kidding? We're the Calgary Flames.

Forgot about Bouma since his contract expired. If the Flames re-sign him then things are going to be very crowded in the bottom 6 center position.

If the Flames don't trade up in the draft, and take Monahan, they have some decent young center depth moving forward.
Backlund
Jankowski
Monahan
Knight
Reinhart
Bouma
No guarantees there but a good mix of size, skill, and defensive awareness.

Happy with the signing but I wonder what it means for Bouma, Reinhart, Horak, Jones. I honestly hope Bouma is our 4th line centre to start the season and I have high hopes for Reinhart as well. Horak to the wing?
Sounds to me like Knight, Bouma and Reinhart will be battling for the bottom six centre spots.

Good trade
If we're lucky, this year's 4th round pick turns into an NHLer in 4 years. Trading that 4th for a 22 year old 200 lb 2-way C is a great trade.
We almost traded this year's 1st and 3rd for a 22 year old 200 lb 2-way C.
