The cost of the new rink would not impact any increase or decrease in revenue. I don't doubt at all revenues would increase if they had a central arena, the question is whether the increase in revenues would justify the additonal cost of a new rink in the short term.

I do think it would make a bit of a difference, I'm sure the Flames would have cheaper tickets if they build the new arena in the north end of Airdrie. Regardless, it hasn't had an impact on how many games I attend but with more convenient access via transit to everyone in the city (Le Breton) I imagine there would be higher demand to actually go to the game, in addition more people would probably buy booze if they had better transit options to get to the game rather than having to resort to driving. Obviously though, a new arena is a non-starter for at least a couple more decades. They are working on making improvements to the Queensway in that area, particularly for transit vehicles, that should make going to the game less of a PITA (getting out of that parking lot the way it is is a nightmare)

I have a buddy who's a died in the wool Canucks fan. He has gone to playoff games before only to see the Canucks really stink. He basically says its not worth the money of about $300 to go see them get razed by the Blackhawks. I kind of hear that argument, when you can watch at home, get drunk off your ass if they get their ass handed to them and save about $400 in the process.

Laugh. I guess you've never gone to a Sens game then.

Taking an hour bus to the game is bad, but what's worse is leaving the game, ginned up after a big win, and having absolutely no where to go, no bars, no restaurants, no shenanigans except for the sobering hour long bus ride back.

It literally makes you not want to go to the game. I understand you can drive there, but why do that when in Vancouver or Calgary I can just take the train and be right downtown.

Soctiabank Place or that arena is Kanata is about as epic fail as you can get.

The aisles run down the middle of each section. Seats to the right of the aisle (as you walk down) are numbered starting with 1 and seats to the left are numbered starting with 101.

My friends family is season tickets for the Canucks and the Leafs. 3 seats in Van and 2 in Toronto and he said it was nearly $30,000 for playoff tickets for both teams total. Of course you have to pay for every potential game of the playoffs but damn that's a **** load of money for hockey tickets.

They are planning on selling some of them to re-coup some money but the Canucks wont buy them back as they usually do because they can't even sell out themselves.

Totally agree, they should definitely build a new taxpayer funded arena in a central location.

This shouldn't be a Canucks fans vs Flames fans thing, this is a fans vs ticket prices issue.

And this is CERTAINLY not an indication of "waning interest" for hockey in Vancouver. The lower bowl is basically priced out of the range of the average fans. It is no coincidence that the upper bowl fills up first before the game. There are TONNES of real, crazy Canuck fans out there who would gladly shell out $40, $50, $60, heck even $90 to see a game, but at $150-$450 a ticket that pretty much ensures suits only.

Imagine the atmosphere if it was first come first serve and all tickets were $30 a pop. I'd wager no one would be complaining about 'lack of noise'!

I imagine they're okay with not being quite full for the first round at elevated prices as it justifies the price bump to even higher prices for subsequent rounds. When you start at $300 for round 1 it makes it much easier to bump to $350 for round 2, $450 for round 3 and $600 for the final. They're probably banking on the loss in sales in round 1 being offset by increased prices with additional revenue in subsequent rounds, which based upon history they will not reach anyways.

Ouch. Those prices seem outrageous.

Sorry if this has already been answered, but is this a substantial increase from previous years?

For me it was the get back to Belleville as fast as you can express. 13 years ago there was nothing around the area. Pretty sad if that is still the case.

There are tonnes of car dealerships. Best NHL arena if you want to buy a minivan after the game!

I have heard before that it was originally supposed to be the centrepiece of an entertainment district, that the government decided shouldn't go ahead once the arena was built there.
