On topic, and from being at the game, I thought Reinhart played very well overall. I like players that give a #### and compete - you win with players like these.
I put two of those goals on Giordano tonight. Very bad pinch on the first goal, and on the fourth the Canucks weren't screening Kipper on the point shot so Giordano felt he had to? When is this guy going to get his game back?

Is this correct NHL protocol? There is no doubt he got his bell rung. I thought the days of the player saying he was okay to go next shift after getting their bell rung was in the past? Gotta give it so Stajan. The guy has taken a lot of hits to the head over his career with the Flames and he always comes right back. He's actually turned out to be a pretty solid player on the back half of his contract.

My (possibly drunken) takes for the night:
Max Reinhart: A -2 rating for his Flames' debut with no points on the night seems unbelievable from the game I watched him play. PMM has been telling us all season that the stat line doesn't tell the whole story with this guy, and after watching him tonight I'm a believer. Incredible work along the boards. The only times I saw him lose a board battle was when he was out-numbered (and even then it was 50/50). Made some rookie mistakes, and seemed to forget he was a winger tonight from time to time (which led to some interesting scrambles for guys to pick up what should have been his man) but overall very impressed with where his game is right now. I'm not quite ready to pencil him into a slot next year, but if he continues to impress during his cuppa I'll seriously consider it.
Mikael Backlund: I know it must seem like I have a man-crush on this guy at this point, but again a very impressive game by him. He's very good in all 3 zones, and seems to have a pretty good read on how the play is going to develop. It's nice to see him putting a bit of an edge into his game. Someone in the GDT commented on a hit he took where if he was a Canuck he would have just stayed down and tried to draw a penalty. Instead he bounced right back up and proceeded to hit the next 3 blue jerseys he saw. This is something he said he had added to his game during the lockout. I remember an interview with him jokingly saying he had garnered a reputation as a "dirty" player during his time in the SEL2. I really hope he spends a lot of time during the off-season working on his faceoffs. I think that's the only element lacking in his game that might keep him from having a lengthy NHL career. Oh, and just a neat stat, he led the team in hits tonight.
TJ Brodie: Another solid game from him. He seems to be very comfortable with his added responsibilities since the Bouw trade. It was also nice to see him dump (?) Sedin on his ass towards the end of the game. I think that's one of the big things missing from his game right now; a bit of physicality. It seems like he's added more of that element compared to last season, but it would be nice to see more. I'm sure that at 22 he's still just coming into his "man-strength", and he seems to want to become more physical, but it's not there yet. Maybe I'm just worried he'll turn into another Bouwmeester; smooth skating d-man who can jump into the play, but has no real shot or physicality. Although I guess with a 4th that would still be a win if he ended up as good as Bouw. Honestly though, I think Brodie has a much higher compete level than Bouw ever did, so I don't think that will be the case.
Horak: Kind of a hard game to judge Horak on. Had a few good plays in the offensive zone, same in the defensive zone, but overall not very noticeable. If he really wants to be a serious consideration for the lineup going forward he's going to have to do something to stand out more. He seems fairly solid defensively, but not great on the cycle and not great at finding his teammates. Hopefully he can find that magic that kept him on the roster out of camp last year.
Mark Giordano: Bad. Just Bad (with a capital B). Don't know what the hell is going on with him this year (and the tail end of last year), but I have to think it's mostly between his ears. Just bad decisions all around. Doesn't seem to have the same compete level that made him a fan favorite the last few seasons. I don't know if he's "I can see why he wasn't drafted" bad, but he has not been good for a long stretch now. I was hoping to see more heart from him during this tail-end of the season; kind of a "this is why I should be the next captain" thing, but clearly that's not happening. At this point it looks like either Gio, Tanguay, or Glencross will be the next captain, and I don't know if there's a good choice in the bunch.
This and That: 4th line was again, fantastic. Don't know if you could ask for anything more from them (replace Begin with someone who doesn't do a leg takedown every fight?) Wouldn't mind seeing McGrattan re-signed next year. Would be great at protecting the kids out there. Begin can go. Wideman is looking more and more like the player I thought we got with that signing. Great in the offensive zone, a disaster in the d-zone. He fooled me the first 15 games or so, but now the true colors are showing. Unfortunately we're stuck with him for a while. Hudler has been underwhelming for a while now. He still makes smart/nifty plays, but it seems like the compete level just isn't there anymore. Maybe it's just culture-shock coming from a winning environment to a losing one. It's something he really hasn't experienced in his career. Hopefully that wears off by the start of next season because, again, he's going to be here for a while. Speaking of next season, will Cervenka be a part of it? I really hope so. The things I complained about with his game at the start of the season (namely boardplay, skating, physicality, general fitness level) have all improved since the start of the season. Over the last few games he seems to have even turned his game up a notch. The optimist in me says he feels like he's auditioning for a contract next year. The pessimist in me says it won't be with the Calgary Flames. I think he would be a good boom/bust gamble for us to take during this rebuild/retool period, but he might not want to come back next year.
Anyways, those are my (possibly drunken) takes for the night. Sorry for the length of the post, but I figure not too many people are even watching the games at this point, so maybe it could use a few more "characters' in here.

It's actually more fun to watch this team lose than it was to watch the team from a couple of weeks ago. At least I think that there are a significant number of players that are working hard out there.

i don't know why everyone is hating on Healy so much. sure he's a total nitwit, but IMO the media dumping on the Flames right now is a good thing. in Edmonton the local and national media has been lapping up everything that Lowe & Co. have been selling for over 5 years now and where has that gotten their franchise? if the media covering Calgary is more harsh and points out our terrible prospect depth, inept management, and general apathy towards building a cup contender over "just making the playoffs", then maybe the owners get shamed just a little bit to put a better team on the ice. if Feaster isn't capable, then let the media rip into him forcing the ownership to find someone up to the task
basically Healy can spew all the hot garbage from his mouth that he wants, because that's exactly what the Flames organization has iced as a team for the past few years

Without looking up stats, I'd say its one of the following two reasons:
1) Coincidence.
or
2) You have a selective memory.

If the media had any influence whatsoever on flames management, the rebuild would have started 3 years ago. For a while now it's been said our organization lives on its own island to an extent, and no amount of ongoing criticism from Healy or anyone else will change that.

I really hate Bieska.
He might get away with the most borderline crosschecks/elbows in the league. I know it is poor taste to wish injury on any player, but i can't wait to see someone lay out bieska's own medicine on him.

Could be, but its also entirely possible that being a veteran on a team that is going nowhere, things like national coverage and the extra hoopla around those games my help provide a little extra excitement and motivation. I could certainly see that being the case.

I am almost at the point where if Feaster can get a good draft pick or package Gio up with a later 1st rounder to move up in the draft, then I say go for it. This guy has completely lost his game. Let's move him at the draft before the rest of the league figures it out.

McGratton or Jackman have to target this guy and beat him severely the next time the teams meet up. Bieksa will cheap shot and run your team like the goof he is until someone makes him back down.
Either that or McGratton or Jackman need to retaliate against the Sedins
I'm kinda sick of the lack of reaction by this team.

I missed the discussion. What happened on the panel? Why is everyone p...ed at Healy? What did he say?
A recap, please. Thanks!
