I hope you are right, we can really use some defense.

Now, that would be sweet

well at the end of the day contracts count towards the limit and it can have a bearing on selecting prospects to sign (maybe I am wrong). I have never really believed in signing washed up players in the AHL, so I am just bitter.

Excellent news!
Wotherspoon is a stud, easily their top prospect on defense. I've enjoyed watching him play live on the few Winterhawk games I have been to vs Kelowna, and he played really well in the WJC as well.
Finished the year with 61GP, 7G, 30A, 37P, +62 (2nd in the league, tops among defencemen, including teammate Seth Jones who finished with a +46 despite scoring 56 points)

Depends how he does in camp.
TJ Brodie came out of junior and made the Flames in his rookie pro year, he ended up getting sent back down after a couple games mind you, but it was kind of a surprise for most.
My bet is he'll play in the AHL, but you never know.

I much rather have a solid group of 6 d men, then have 2-3 guys that log a ton of ice time and not do anything.
You don't necessarily need a #1 defenseman to be a top team, but you do need a #1 center.
A group of 6 great can can play 18-20 solid minutes and within there game is going to be how it works.

With the possible exception of Carolina, every team that has won a Stanley Cup in the last 50 years has had a #1 D. You are correct in saying the #1 C is important. More important? You need both.
To the best of my recollection, New Jersey is the only team is the same span that won the Cup without a true#1 C ( Holik).
Most that have won have had a 1A and 1B.

Not sure if this has been talked about on the backburner forum or not, but what are the collective thoughts on Granlund?
Great WJ, put up a few less points than last year but was playing without his brother, many thought of him as a crutch.. proved he can produce without.
Excited to be a Flame? Indifferent? Emo? We don't hear much about these guys and I would hate to see another Erixon incident.. not that Granlund is projected for the same kind of upside, not drawing a comparison in skill just the situation.

That would be a 30th ranked defense in the league

This is good news. On a side note it's also a nice mild sedative for what happened at the beginning of the weekend.

I don't know is danny Boyle a real #1 anchor or is this the case of well he logs the most ice time so he's a -#1 defenseman.
I think it's easier to have a #1 guy on the backed then a center.

He played for Canada and won Gold at the 2010 Olympics.
I think he also made the 2006 team as an extra.
He's getting up there in age now, but the guy was clearly a #1 defenseman throughout his career.

Maybe someone smarter than me can help me out with a question. What are the guidelines regarding whether a player returns to junior or plays with Abbotsford (or the Flames)? It seems confusing that Wotherspoon was young enough to play the the World Juniors this year, but now that he's signed, most people seem to be pencilling him in the Heat. Is he too old for junior after this year? What are the rules regarding an over-ager in junior (like Ferland)? Never really had a good grasp on these rules.

He is eligible to be an over ager in the WHL next season, but that is really going to pointless for his development, he has played enough junior hockey, it's time to turn pro.

Wotherspoon can play up to 10 games with Abbotsford and/ or Calgary this season without burning a year towards free agency.

A Player May play in the NHL once he is 18.
May Play in the AHL once he is 19
and May Play in the CHL leagues until he is 20 at the start of the season (although each CHL can only have a limited number of players in their 20 year old season).
So after they are draft they can either play in the NHL or Junior the first year, and in any of the 3 leagues the second year.
