Hockey ends in Feb/March now? I'm pretty sure it went longer when I was a kid.

Yeah, I could be wrong, but I remember the minor hockey week tournament being in late February or March, and after minor hockey week there was tons of hockey left in the season.
I'm probably misremembering, but I seem to remember there only being like 3 months off from a minor hockey season.

Depends about tournments as many tournaments take you into April. Playoffs just finished in the last week or so. I would say Early April is when most people are done. Spring hockey starts in mid April and goes til late June.

Maybe your parenting experience is different. I would love to hear it.

What's with the defensiveness? It's a simple question, why do you feel the need to make decisions for your children about what form of recreation they pursue? If you're kids said they wanted to play spring hockey rather than another sport why would you be against it?

Outside the city, CAHL was done reg season by the Feb long week end as was the SCAHL, and AMBHL. If your team missed playoffs they were by done Feb 16. If they were eliminated in the first round, they got one more week end out of it. It does seem early but I guess to get play offs done before provincials they have to end the reg season so soon. Provincials were last week end and the one beofre so everyone is pretty much done now.

Well that's a nonsensical comparison, but if they'd rather spend their time studying programming than playing sports that's fine.

Kagan hesitates for moment.
"And its worst."

Really? Because that's pretty much par for the course for most sports.

my son is just finishing his second year as an atom player (goalie), and while the team was eliminated from the playoffs two weeks ago, we still had some practices (which is fine since we are still in the business of developing young players), and to my surprise he did not want to play spring hockey (he opted for ball hockey as a player) - and to be honest I am sort of glad, as I want to see him develop himslef as an athlete - versus just a hockey player. Wehn the year comes where he wants to play more hockey, then I guess I'll be fine with that.
My only problem with spring hockey is the cost, and the number of weekend tourney's - it is tough to give up weekends to be inside at a rink when the weather is getting nice.
All that being said, there are kids out there who only want to play hockey - if that is the case, then why enrol them in something else, if they don't want to be there.
My only hockey dream for my son is for me to be able to someday watch him play his best in a meaningful game (minor hockey week, playoff game etc) - like most young kids his dream is to play for the Buffaloes, then move on to the NHL........

Most people don't. That's why winning fights is easier if you have half a mind about what you're doing.
Not that I'm condoning it but frack man, if you're gonna fight, then damnit fight, don't sit there and slap fest.

You're missing the point. Children need direction. Too many hockey parents use the excuse that "hey, my kid loves playing hockey" to justify having a single sport being the centre of their universe for their entire childhood. Maybe the same way that some parents would say "hey, my kid loves studying programming" to justify them playing video games all day.
How would a kid be able to figure out all of the avenues open to him if he's only ever been exposed to the thing that he liked to do when he was 6?

Umm studying programming and playing video games are not the same thing, so again a bizarre comparison.
And nobody said anything about not exposing your kids to things. Give them options, but don't force their decision.

Did you read my response? Do you have kids? I would love to hear about your experiences.
Kids at age 7 and 9 do not have the cognitive ability to make decisions by themselves, hell some adults don't.
Actually, I would be against them playing spring hockey.

Spring hockey is unregulated. It is not sanctioned by Hockey Alberta. That means that any ass that thinks they know hockey can start a team. As I said, there are spring hockey coaches in Central Alberta that are banned from their home associations. I also think that kids should be exposed to numerous sports.
BTW, I am still waiting for you experiences on parenting.

What response? Do I have kids? No. Not sure why that's relevant.
As to your issues with spring hockey, those are legitimate concerns, but as others have pointed out there are a variety of different spring hockey programs that children can participate in. It seems to me that you made your decision up based on stories from the extreme end of the spectrum without considering that those are likely outliers.

Jesus you are a contrarian.
I have made me decision on spring hockey based on discussion with many people. People who's kids play, people who's kids don't play, Hockey Alberta repesentatives, and an NHL scout.
Don't give a rat's if you agree with it our not.
The fact that is it not regulated that is the main issue. Why do you think a coach gets banned from coaching in their home association?

Then why did you bring programming up in your last post? Sigh.
If you just let your kids do exactly what they want, they won't have much exposure to the range of things they could be doing. Of course you give them options, but letting them focus on only one activity for 12 months of every year shouldn't be one of them. Letting them steer the ship when all they care about are hockey and Pokemon might be a recipe for failure.

3) STOP Playing Spring and Summer Hockey and START Training!
This is something that anyone in hockey development worth his/her salt already knows, but parents really struggle with. Burke mentioned that they filmed and analyzed a couple dozen of these games a while back and they found that in any 90 minute game, on average, the third line right winger had the puck on his stick for about 2s and didn’t complete a single pass.

I agreed that it is certainly an issue, but that doesn't mean that there aren't alternatives within spring hockey that don't have the issues you point out. You're tarring the entirety based on the minority, which is the point I made to you from the start. You think there aren't crap coaches in rugby or lacrosse or any other sport?
