Usually when one bumps a 3 year old thread it's a good idea to post some of the "fun" you speak of.

Just goes to show that pre-draft ranking mean nothing. I love re-drafts, because they are almost always completely different then how the ''experts'' rank them during that period in time. All the nitpicking of stats, ranks and endless arguments. Yet down the road it's almost always completely different.

I mean, sure, lots of effort, but it largely makes no sense. Connor Hellebuyck and Colton Parayko are 4/5 ahead of Morgan Reilly, who is basically a top pairing defenseman, and Olli Maata who's pretty close himself? Korpisalo, a backup with some upside, is ranked ahead of Tanner freakin' Pearson and Nail Yakupov? I guarantee if you tried to trade Yakupov for Korpisalo (or for that matter Matt Dumba) you'd have a deal immediately... one could go on.

A better exercise might be to redraft those players from the first 60 selections. Hindsight is 20/20 and nobody was going to burn a first or second on a player ultimately taken 130th. If every team in the league passed on you 3 times, you weren't on the radar, so it seems unfair to criticize the top selections based on the info at the time.
Even so, Yakupov still in round one huh? Seems weird since he's a dud.

This is why looking at re-drafts so many years later is pointless. 6 goalies taken in the 1st round. I don't think that's ever happened, nor will it ever happen. Even if it was a weak draft for skaters, there's no way a team will take those kind of risks on goalies in round 1.
Not trying to rag on your attempt to re-draft, but it just points out how it almost never resembles the reality of drafting.

Why not give it a shot yourself instead of ripping on it? It's the summer. It's boring.

You're right, it would never happen...
BUT since we have the gift of hindsight this would be my re-draft based on potential. I would argue that the goalie class from that year is showing much more potential as potential #1s than the forwards in the class of which there are few top-liners.
2012 was an odd draft.
(@CHL - and yes, at this point Korpisalo and Dumba > Yakupov who is no good)

This may be true, but you could also say it's pointless to argue pre-draft as well, since things always end up completely different anyways.

I think that's the point, that and that it's fun to look back. Any time you re-draft 3+ years out you're going to get names jumping up and dropping all over the place, because the draft is largely imperfect.
Of course it's mostly pointless, so is 99% of the discussion that goes on here. So what?

I remember Forsberg was projected top 3 but dropped all the way to eleventh with Colorados pick (that Washington got in the Varlamov trade)
Colorado could still have Shattenkirk, Stastny, O'rielly and Forsberg but instead have what to show for it?

Johnson, Varlamov, Siemens, Grigorenko, Zadorov, Compher? I think a second round pick too.
I get your point, but Stastny left a free agent so he shouldn't really be included in that

Funny about Forsberg. Great move, taking him 11th. But then trading him for Erat? Shows they had no idea what they were doing!

Having another Forsberg playing in Colorado would be just weird. I know they've already retired #21, but they should just retire the name too.
Imagine someone else named Iginla playing for the Flames. No thanks.
(I mean it's not like the guy is named Smith or Johnson or whatever. Forsberg and Iginla are pretty unique names in the history of the NHL.)
