lol @ the overnight Hodgson fan club.... Exact same clowns who for years harped that he was too slow with a liability of a bad back who would never live up to his overhyped world juniors expectations. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Im no fan of Gillis, believe Nonis is the better GM who got the short end of the stick in Vancouver.

you mean "Tubby McBlowhard", as Flames fans so affectionately coined him?

I think the Kassian / Hodgson deal was a big mistake on Vancouver's end; seemed like a move where the ultimate rational was to have a hard-nosed player to answer to the Lucic and Marchand.

LOL

Always funny to see you call out people for their past comments but just out of interest do you have the posts that the same people are saying it was a bad deal are the same guys that are saying Hodgson sucked?

This is a big board so it is possible that there are different people saying each thing.

Feel free to Pm them to me to not derail the thread.

You basically created a scenario where Gillis can't get any credit for any of his good UFA signings. I hate the Canucks too, but at least be a little objective.

I gave credit for the Samuelsson signing. What I said about Hamhuis and Garrison is true though.

That's pretty much where I'm coming from on this. Kassian does have talent, and we do need the size, but he's inconsistent at this point and being benched for laziness when he was with the Wolves earlier this year is a sign that he lacks the inner drive to fulfill his potential. I really hope I'm wrong, of course.

Whereas it's been obvious to me since juniors that Hodgson has exceptional hockey sense, the unteachable instincts of a top tier NHLer, and that barring injury he's going to be one of the best players in the league, sooner rather than later.

Nonis traded second round picks and players away like they were candy... well maybe in Nonis's cases carrots - he wouldn't trade candy. Nonis did nothing to develop the farm team, he held onto players long past their expiry date as was the case with the west coast express years. He made one amazing trade to get Luongo for Bertuzzi though. Past that he wasted a lot of second round picks on the like of Taylor Pyatt, Bryan Smolinski, Mika Noronen, Keith Carney, and Eric Weinrich.

His drafting was subpar at best (as is Gillis's) but I think of drafting as more of an indication of quality of scouting staff than the general manager.

Those are pretty good moves, but also pretty unspectacular moves. The Erhoff trade is a robbery
Yeah the Ehrhoff trade was a #2 offensive defenseman with reasonable contract for an ECHL at best scrub.

The Sedins being signed for what they were signed for is an amazing deal.

Quote:
Most of those moves are bad moves, or at the best debatable. Malhotra was a terrible signing, as was Sundin, and Lapierre helped turn the refs against the team permanently for his antics.
Malholtra was a bad signing in the long term but only because of a puck to the eye, before that he was the best defensive center on the team and one of the best in the league. There was even some moderate rumblings of him being a Selke nominee due to his pure defensive work - something that never happens now that it is a guy who can score goals and not suck in his own end award.

Sundin was good for the team, they needed a good leader and someone to help the team, didn't work out in terms of immediate success Kesler and Sedin have said that him being around has helped them grow as players, so I can't argue with that.

Lapierre was good in 2011 in the playoffs and is an annoying player to play against, defensively responsible, cheap, and can score the occasional goal... I think he cost a 4th round pick at the deadline, that is as good a deal as you will find at the time. Agreed about the diving, it can get pretty bad.

The Garrison contract will be on that list as well, surprised you didn't mention the Luongo contract because it is an albatross. His draft picks have also been meh
I don't mind Garrison, he is a good defenseman, good positionally, and not noticeable for any gaffes and that is good enough for me.

The Luongo contract is bad, I will put that in that category for sure.

Draft wise - too soon to say but I really do think that lies more with the scouting and luck than with the GM.

Samuelsson wanted to play with the Sedins. There, your work is done.

Hodgson was always gonna leave. You can't build a franchise around players that don't want to be there, and as far as I'm concerned you're as good as screwed in playoffs as well. With Vancouver as contenders and Hodgson's stats what they were, Hodgson should have been working his ass off to improve defensively. He wasn't.

But they could have gotten better than what they traded him for, Kassian is a bit of a bum. I hope the Sedins work their magic on him at any rate.
