I guess this reinforces the idea that management is still in win now mode. If I were colorado i wouldnt match and take our potential top 5 pick.

Dont like this one bit

Yeah he will still be rfA. I think he will have arbitration rights also. Flames better hope he will negotiate in good faith after this contract.

Holy Isht. I really hope the Flames aren't gonna end up overpaying for this kid.

$6.5 M for Ryan O'Reilly next season? Are you freaking kidding me?

Horrible. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Not sure the guy is as good as others seem to think he is. I've often viewed him as a great 3rd line centre, a good 2nd line centre but not a top line centre.

If that 1st ends up being top 5 - dear lord.

Is he really that good though? If the Avs let him go he comes to Calgary under a lot of pressure and expectations and I don't know if he's truly an elite talent.

Don't think you can do that. If he signs he is stuck with the team for a year. At least that's what the last CBA was.

My guess is the Avs wouldn't trade to the Flames if they matched given how infuriated they are likely to be with them for doing it.

Avs will definitely match given that they are asking a lot more than a 1st and 3rd rounder for him.

The thing is those picks are a dice roll as well, not to mention that at this point in the season who knows if they'll be top 5 or top 20 (positive thinking). O'Reilly is at least a bit more of a proven commodity.

Love the aggressiveness. We need a top center, and as high as our pick could be, there's as good a chance as any that any center we take could end up a lesser player than O'Reilly.

Factor in trading Iggy and other pieces, we can still recoup picks. But if you're going to gamble on a player, might as well gamble on a center.

I'm not so sure? That 1st round pick can easily be top 10, maybe top 5. Av's management is not going to want to pay him $6.5 million next year.

I'm really torn. ROR is so young that it's like drafting someone with a little more assurance on success (compared with Jankowski). Unless we had a shot to be top 3 (which with the new draft rules, I guess we would) having a 1st rounder be as good as ROR is at this stage is a no brainer.

Our allergy to the draft makes me a little nervous though... especially if we don't have a pick in rounds 1, 2 or 3.

Very torn.

This is a funny contract - because man, the QO based off that 6.5M will be something that Colorado will NOT want to pay O'Rielly.

I hate this team so freaking much.

Cheers to being complacent with mediocrity for a few more years...
