I read somewhere that this decision was 100% political. I don't have the link but apparenly the IOC and the head of the international wrestling board (whatever it's called) have been having some very public spats. From what I understand the wrestling association head isn't willing to play the IOC's political games and this decision was essentially his punishment.
What could possibly be more 'olympian' that a sport involving two men (or women) with no equipment and the winner is decided by whichever is faster, stronger and smarter?
The IOC is making the Olympics more and more of a joke all the time. What a mixed message in the Olympics: we will test the athletes stringently to ensure that there is no cheating. However, the IOC will blatently cheat and sell their allegience to the highest bidder. Fair play my ass.

Only makes perfect sense for the both hands out IOC to abolish an event that has been competing since the Ancient Olympic Greek games since 708BC.
Well done IOC, jackass of the month award.

I think it's definitely political to keep Modern Pentathalon, which most people thought would defintiely be out.
But why Wrestling, why did it get 5 votes in the first round. That's the mystey to me.

I was implying that the votes were paid for. Hence, five dollar signs.

oh sure but why Wrestling, what did Wrestling ever do?
I think it's because it was alphabetically last on the list.

I heard a rumor that there was a bit of a pissing match between the IOC chair and the head of the IWF.

It was a long, tense battle to save the sport, but it appears to have worked as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted Sunday to include wrestling as a provisional sport for the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games.

Wonder what kind of restrictions would be needed to get MMA into the Olympics? I'm assuming the IOC would want helmets?

Why don't some of the real wrestlers try to win an Olympic medal? Hulk Hogan is old but last I heard he was still wrestling professionally. Are moves like the leg drop legal in Olympic wrestling?

Wrestling getting back on the Olympic program is proof that the US, Iran, Iraq and USSR can figure out how to work together for a common goal.
